Hi guys,
The elise S2 needs her oil changed. 33k miles. What type of oil is best for these cars?

Thanks

Depends on use - if it's road stuff only then a 10W40 or 5W40 (whatever the book says) semi synth will be fine (Magnatec, Halfords own brew or similar)

I'd still use a decent oil for road, it's not like in the grand scheme of things it's hugely more. I seem to recall a few people saying they sounded like tractors with Magnatec, can't remember if it was K or Yota they were on about.

Order Silkolene Pro R via Opie Oils and it costs around £35-40 for 5 litres, about the same you'd pay in Halfords for any old bottle of synthetic. Your engine will thank you in the long run, too.

My sport 160 book that came with the car says to use either 10w/60 or 15w/50.

I had a look around and mobile do a very advanced all that 15w/60 its designed for oldish engines that are tuned. Not to be used in really new advanced engines as the oil is quite thick...

I was going to use Mobil 1 0w/40 but now I am not sure...

As Kevin says you can get Silkolene pro sat an excellent price from Oilman. Have a look on Seloc technical forum. Very interesting thread on oil running at the mo.

Unipart 5W40 fully synthetic in mine smile

Unless the car is very highly tuned or spends a lot of time on track or being driven on the redline then 10W60 is overkill and a decent 10W40 or 5W40 is fine in K series powered cars if it's standard or VVC.

For your car if not tracked 10w40 Magnatec, it really reduces the top end noise, I had 10w60 Castrol and Mobil 1 in the same car. Either side of the Magnatec when I had a K and the Magnatec at least sounded to be doing the job best.

Agree with comments above regarding Silkolene Race Oil ( 5w-40 ).

It really isn't much more expensive than the top range stuff at Halfords and although it is pure overkill for my driving style ( weekend runs, no racing ) it is marvellous stuff. Engine sounds so much quieter and smooth.

For the sake of a tenner here or there, why not use the best?

Another thumbup for the silkolene-I bought 3x 5 litres from oilman so it works out even cheaper. The thread on SELOC is def worth a quick read. First time I've changed oil/filter on the Exige yesterday. SELOC Wiki says should be 20-30 minute job. Took me 2 hours!!!!!eeklaugh Is this a record??

To be fair I am tracking the car so wanted to go for the best protection.

I really can't understand why anyone would skimp on something as fundamental to an engine's health as the oil.
Its all well and good saying its only a Metro engine but how many Metros would have been driven like Elises?
To put good oil in will cost less than £20 a year. Your engine will thank you in time or are you really that hard up (or tight?)wink
