Hi All,

From my previous threads you'll see I've had starting problems with my 4.2.

Initial suggestions thought it was the immobiliser so I did the starter circuit bypass trick (thanks Ross !!), which didn't solve the problem.

Then looked at the starter as the cause, to test this I got a wire and did a positive feed to the little wire and the starter spun smile. So the problem must be electrical yes????

However, she still won't start with the button.

Can anyone suggest how to check the electrics and the ignition module for any faults.

Thanks again for all your help, I really miss driving her weeping

Regards

Hi Jit.

Can hear the fuel pump prime, when you turn the ignition on ?

I was going to ask if the warning buzzer comes on, but my old 4.2 hasn't got one.

Hi Guys,

Yes, tried the silver key in the cubbyhole - nothing

And yes the fuel pump does prime when when you press the start button. I can hear a clicking in the boot area too.

Sorry should have mentioned this earlier

Thanks

Go in behind the Helmet holder, this is where some of the starter gubbins is, when i rebuilt mine one of the wires became dislodged, it was white (I THINK) from one of the boxes, plugged it back in and all was good. Hope this is it!

Does still sound like the immobiliser, and bypassing it didn't work ?

Mine's in at the moment having some wiring issues sorted.

The rear screen has been leaking from the top, and while the boot has a bit of water in, the space behind the helmet holder is drowned causing umpteen problems.

If the pump's priming, the little metal key is ok.

Is it still an intermittent problem or is it all the time ?

The problem started as intermittent a few weeks ago, then one night it failed to start altogether.

No amount of time holding the button down, or letting the car cool down would make it start. It's now sat in my garage waiting for a solution

I think the problem must be electrical as the starter does spin when supplied with a positive feed.

Just don't know how to check the trail form immobilser to ingnition unit to starter.

Sometimes when mine won't start i hold down the start button and whilst held down turn silver key to off position then back on.

And will always start as soon as the silver key turns on and makes contact.

Nothing to lose in trying this method smile

my old one did that every so often. the trick that worked for me was holding the button down and if it didn't start after 10 or so seconds, turn the silver key off then on and bang, it started.

Remove the helmet hole.

Press the start button and wiggle the loom behind the helmet hole at the same time (this takes a bit of acrobatics ..... try using your left hand for the start button) and see if this helps.

This may help to identify if there is a break somewhere in the loom there.

BTW, does it start with a push?

Only a thought , mine had never had any starter maladies , but after getting the clutch replaced - the push the button! - nothing !,try a couple of minutes later - started ok , this was becoming regular ( half a dozen times !). Had the connections on the starter checked - no apparent problems . So stripped and cleaned the battery earth strap connections , including the earth connection to chassis ( rear of nearside front wheel arch ), Hey presto no more problems ! , back to starting on the nail everytime (several dozen times since ). Might be worth checking - hope it helps 'n you get it sorted.
