It is possible to wind it back without the tool, but the tool makes it much *much* easier. What you need to do is screw the piston into the calliper i.e. push it in and turn it at the same time. Make sure you don't damage the outside of the piston while you do this - try to grip it by the face rather than the outer edge. If there's any chance you can pop down to the shops to get the right tool (it's well known and commonly available) you really will find it makes the job trivially easy.

Thanks
Update. Ok I went and bought a tool £16 and got the passenger side back in. 2 hours a world record I think.

anyway the bloke who sold me the tool thinks that on mondeo's the drivers side is left handed thread so I would need a different tool.

Anyone know if this is true

The reason for using a left hand thread on hub components is to stop torqued up bolts from shifting and loosening under vibration. The handbrake adjuster thread isn't clamping anything and I don't see how that could ever be a problem. On all the Fords I've ever worked on the two sides are identical and the same tool fits all of them (both sides, all models). Maybe they changed their mind when they got to your model? Or maybe your tool shop bloke is talking b*llocks. You'll soon find out if you try it.

ETA: I suspect he's confusing the handbrake adjuster with the main hub securing nut (which probably *IS* handed). It's an easy mistake to make seeing is how they're both metal things somewhere near the wheel.

He was correct for some reason the piston screws in with a left hand thread. I could use the tool to turn it but not the part of the tool that pushes back against the piston as well.

My hands are hurting and cut to bits my back is hurting ive messed about for 4.5 hours my jeans and top are covered in muck and im stressed out .

Next time Ill just pay for someone to do it wink

it is true that they turn in different directions to reset them.
many vehicles are like this now.i use an air powered tool(blue point) it works a treat and does both directions.

Always makes it easier if you pump the brake pedal with
the engine off to take the pressure out of the system and
remove the resavoir cap. Fluid level will rise quite a bit
if pads were well warn down.
