Hello,

Living in Europe, I am interested by buying a porsche to go to work. I hesitate between a boxster (for the handling and the convertible) and then I keep my volvo wagon for the week end with the family. Or to sell the Volvo and buy a Cayenne S. All others models are out of my budget (carrera is the nicest by far but...)
I also got a Lotus Esprit for track days, great handling and fun, but NOT as everyday car.
Does the Boxster S give a lot more for someone who will probably not track day the porsche?
Thanks in advance

Ben

I cannot imagine two more different cars than the Cayenne S and the Boxster S.

You have to decide what you want the car to do. If you want to be able to go to work and take your family the Cayenne will do the job. But no matter how good it is it will not be able to match the Boxster S in terms of its handling - its just too heavy and too high up for that.

Since you have a track car. And you have a family car I'd suggest the Boxster S as your "road toy" and personal commuter car. I have one and its great fun.

BUT! You say you prefer the Carrera but its out of your budget? If you were willing to purchase a *used* car you should be able to buy a 996 Carrera 2 with, say, 25000 miles and three years on it for about the price of a new Boxster S. Then you'd be getting the car you actually want...

Since you are buying this car as *your* toy for commuting I'd say it was important to get the one you really want - even if it means purchasing a used one.

I agree with Don on this one, if you are looking for a sports car to enjoy your daily drive to work, then a Cayenne is not the answer, it may be sporty for an SUV but it ain't a sports car. I still think the Boxter S is the best value car in the Porsche range, it has enough grunt, grip & handling balance to have big fun along with a soft top for when the suns out. Buy & enjoy, just remember there is talk of a new model/facelift in 04/05, so current model, low mileage secondhand may be the best way to go !!

Thank you Grant and Don for your interesting answers.
I really like the extraordinary lines of the carrera but colleages who get one (non convertible) told me that for the difference of power they would (but they don't do it in reality...) go for the boxster.
Second hand is an option I have to think about...
I am also happy that nobody suggests to sell the Esprit to buy a carrera because it makes sense but not for me.

Bher, which Esprit have you got, funnily enough I nearly purchased a dealers demo V8GT a few years back, great grunt & grip although I wasn't hot on the gearchange. still an all round great drvers car,it was close but I ended up getting my first 996. Still Volvo for shopping, Lotus for track days & BoxterS for the rest, great garage !!
