wing mirror removal
Discussion
My wing mirror has been loose for ages, and knew i'd have to sort it at some point. This week, the mirror frame broke by where it fits onto the turret.
It looks like it has had a previous repair here to try to reattach it.
I have disconnected the wiring and taken the wing mirror off, the turret still being attached to the car.
There is a grub screw holding the turret onto the boss, but there doesnt appear to be room to get an allen key down to undo it.
Is it just a P.I.T.A. job and i have to cut an allen key right down to fit it in, or does it only work from a certain angle, or am i just missing something??
I have tried turing the turret thinking the boss might undo, but the turret just turns.
How do i undo the grub screw to get the turret off??? Help!

Same thing happened to my driver side mirror. from memory you have got to move the plastic cowling out of the way cut down the allen key and tape up to protect your paint, i repaired mine with arraldite steel turned out that the metal body that holds the glass had snaped because spring that allows you to hold the mirror back had corroded,oh and it was a P.I.T.A,
alternatively take off the bit that fits to the car as you have the mirror off

It just doesn't look like the allen key will fit, even when cut down! - Will give it a try tomorrow though.
Can you remember whether the grub screw was at the top, bottom, left or right when you undid it?
Which bit did you mean by 'alternatively take off the bit that fits to the car as you have the mirror off'
Do you mean the boss that screws into the car? If so, how do you remove this with the turret attached?
Cheers,
Tim.

It's an idiotic design as it can be almost impossible to remove when it's broken. I suspect your mirror frame has broken, as in this photo - note the intact replacement frame:

I was able to turn the boss/turret assembly as a whole when my frame broke, by sticking a lever through the turret and gently (but firmly) unscrewing it. Here's the brass nut bonded into the door:

When you've finally got the whole thing apart, it needs to be completely assembled before fitting, including the wiring. Then push the wiring back through the nut and screw the whole assembly back into the door. Once it's tight, check the position of the mirror and make a note of how far out of alignment it is. Then unscrew the whole assembly, adjust the position of the turret on the boss, retighten the grub screw and refit the entire unit. Repeat this process until the assembly is in the right place when screwed tightly back in.
The spring clip on the mirror frame allows three or four different positions. Whilst I can't remember which position to set it at, I do remember that the LHS mirror should be one position different from the RHS mirror. You'll know if it's wrong because the mirror won't be level when fitted (you'll see what I mean when you get this far!).
According to other posts I've read on here, some owners are able to get an Allen key into the grubscrew. But like yours, it was impossible on mine, there just isn't enough room.
Good luck.

When I did mine I had to use a small pin punch to drive the fitting from the door and then lock the grub screw before screwing the assembled unit back into postion. It takes a few attempts to get the position right. There's definately no room on my car to get at the grub screw when the assembly is screwed into the door.
