Yesterday, when I parked my car after a run, I noticed a small puddle of coolant appear on the ground under the front. I soon found this to be trickling out from under the expansion cap. The running temperature seems fine. After reading the relevant section in the Bible. I topped up the coolant and replaced the cap for a new one. After todays trip to the Hants TVRCC meet which went without fault, I returned only to find another puddle on my drive. Any Ideas? Craig

I know mine leaks if I fill it above the half way mark/weld. Many do, have you filled it up recently? Perhaps it needs to find its own level. The level they like to sit at varies from car to car along as its not empty. Let it chuck a load out check it. run it again a few times keeping a check that it doesnt get to low, if you find no more puddles and the theres still water in there then i would say thats where its happiest.

It should only be filled up half way.

Made this mistake when I first had my Griff too!

Am currently filling it a bit above the weld, as having just drained and refilled the system it is dropping in level occasionally. There is no evidence of leaks, so am assuming it is the odd packets of air working their way through.

Agree with the above completely yes, when I first got my car I religiously added coolant and was a bit concerned that it used to lose it. When a friend following pointed out that a load came out the back once I was up to temperature I realised that perhaps I was wasting my time. Mine has found its own level (quite low, maybe 2/3rds down) and hardly needs a drop now! thumbup

...you might like to get yourself a replacement and slip it on; I'm led to believe that they do not last forever and once they start to pass water, then they're only good for the bin. They are VW in origin, but there are two types - one as the gubbins inside the cap stand proud of the rim of the cap and the second is all very much recessed inside the cap - they are not interchangeable with the expansion tank on your Griff... despite what the main dealer tells you! nerd

The new cap that I bought from the TVR main dealer looks the same as the old one from the top, but if you turn it over, the preasure release valve looks slightly different. When I mentoined this, the guy said it was a Quinten Hazel replacement part. I tried umpteen VW and Audi dealers on Saturday and none of them held this part in stock. The cap fits well. Do you think I should carry on using it? Craig.

Dealing with the first cap first, does it lose any coolant past the halfway mark in the expansion tank? If not I really don't think you have anything to worry about. (NB It has to be done up tightly)

concerning my previous post - what I meant to say was; one cap will fit, (i.e. screw on) the other will not. If your replacement screws up, then I'm sure it will be fine.
