Illegal number plate

I was pulled today for my front number plate being too small. Having measured the recess in the bumper a legal numberplate will be to big. Am i missing something? Im hoping Mark sees this, should give him a chuckle, ive only had the car a week and ive been pulled already LOL

Cheer mate, interesting to see the comments. I ordered a pair of plates last night as i cant be arsed always being on the lookout for plod and dont need the hassle.
