Bit of a long shot this one but.....already been on the car forums trying to find someone who offers chauffeur services, now after anyone who might offer photography services for weddings!

We are getting married in Hertfordshire in 2009 and a photographer is the one thing we have struggled to get any information for. Any help appreciated.

Well actually it did cross my mind! Problem is I couldn't drive it and take photos at the same time, or be in two places at once, but if you can work out a plan whereby I only have to do one thing at once, anything is possible... have a look at my e-mail reply and see if the logisitcs work spin

redface That's very kind of you; I just do what I think will work and mostly it does. Each time I try to get a bit better. There are people here far more experienced than me, but importantly the wonder hasn't worn off yet.

What sort of questions did you ask before deciding on the photographer? I'm getting married at the end of the summer and am going to meet the potential photographer on Saturday. Apart from looking at their past work is there anything else I should consider?

Cheers

Choosing a photographer is not the same as choosing a cake or other commodity, because you're actually employing a person for the day. The results they get will be the defined product by which your wedding will be remembered. Naturally they have to be able to produce the standard of work that you want and know their kit inside out, but they should also have a good understanding of your day and, something I do at least, try to fit in with your plans and wishes rather than force you to fit theirs.

I've heard many stories such as 'I went to a friend's wedding and the photographer was dreadful, he made us stand about for hours... he was really slow...' etc. To me wedding photography is incredibly interpersonal - you are parachuted into a group of maybe 100 people, all strangers apart from two. In that day I have to be nice to everybody, build trust, find time to speak to everybody, and be everybody's friend for that day. The better we get on, the better the photographs will be.

In short, photographic ability aside, choose someone who is easy to get on with and will mix in well with your family and guests. I hate being called 'The Photographer'; it creates a line. With weddings or portraiture, I think the trick is to create an environment which engenders the best photographic opportunites. It's about people.

What date? wink

Questions : find out what's included in the price. Ie. start & end times for the day / how many shots / how many prints / online album / how many copies of physical album / what type of physical album / etc...

Apart from that, you have to like his work (online), then arrange a meeting to like him/her and look at far more of their work. At the end of the day you have to be sure that he is capable of producing results you will love.

During our search we found there was a clear difference between professionals and nice guys with some really expensive kit doing it as a hobby.

Oh that is so true. I was having a drink with a friend who is also a photographer at a restaurant once and we actually cringed because the photographer was so awkward and cheesy. It is imperative that the photographer integrates well with guests and has the right personality. Much depends on the groom introducing the photographer to family and guests as 'Fred'/'Jane'. That way they see you as Fred/Jane and not 'the photographer'. The same holds true for all social photography.

The date is the 13th September and the wedding is in Derry in Northern Ireland, we live in London so there are going to be a few trips back and forth to sort out arrangements, one being this coming weekend.

Simpo Two, I totally agree, the relationship you have with the photographer is so important, you only get one shot so to speak. Hopefully things will go well on Saturday, he has come highly recommended. I have some ideas of what I want from the photos but no idea about albums etc.

Doh, unfortunately I'm not at the stage where people fly me to the venue frown

Recommendations from people you know are a very good start I think. I don't know how one quantifies 'degree to which you get on with someone'. Maybe imagine having a pub lunch with them. For example, regardless of your politics, you could probably have a decent lunch with Tony Blair but not Gordon Brown...

Hope he passes the interview and that it all goes well! party
