Street/strip engines and compressions !
Discussion
As ive never had a sbc but heard how much compression they can take, what would be a sensible amount of compression to use it on the road, and only have to put unleaded or if i had to super unleaded ? I dont want it that low that i will loose valueble power and i intend on using a cam that will give me a power band around 3k+ to 7k and ive been told that you need a good strong compression to run a big cam and get the best out of it ! Can any of you good knolageable peolpe give me any advice on what my limit might be for normal pump gas for on the road. I dont mind putting a octaine booster in when im racing to give me 2 or 3 octaine just to be safe.
Look at the engines that are being built in the USA. they all run street gas on about 10-1.
I used to run 12.5-1 on the street with a .630 lift roller cam set up and big heads, but with all the new cylinder head technology now you don't really need that sort of compression.
I'd run 10/ 11-1, cam of about .550 lift a good set of ally heads, RPM intake etc, lets face it you don't need 7000rpm on the street.

I must be a bad boy, I run a RV8 with 13.1-1 static compression on optimax, and there is NO damage in the engine due to det problems, a few probs caused by broken timing gear, but nothing to do with compression,Hopefully, the Static will be bumped up to 14.5-15.0 with a skim. If this is too much, all I need to do is fit the thicker style head gaskets.
However , my Dynamic compression seems to work out around 10.5ish mainly due to a lot of duration on the cam,

who told you to use 13 to 1?

I dont reaily want that much ! Its just there is a nice engine on eurodragster that is 13.1 with the heads that richi used on this engine. It is for sale with no top end and was hoping my heads would be lower compreseion. Its only a 355ci but i was hoping to get a 427 sb. I know its not what i was wanting but i thought it was nicly priced and it has all the sump oil pump etc with it so it would be a near built engine rather than just getting the block and internals like im after and it would also save me money and time looking for the pumps cam etc that i will still need.
In the states they use 10.1 comp, Dont they only use 91 ron fuel too ??
As i say im only new to chevys so all the advice and feed back im getting from you all is greatly appreciated
At the moment all i have is some AFR 227 race heads. I knew nothing about them but my mate told me to buy them as they are very good hears. Anyone got any views on them.

good luck with that compression.Hopefully you either have a big wallet or a large ali skip...lolHowever , my Dynamic compression seems to work out around 10.5ish mainly due to a lot of duration on the cam,

Don't try 13:1 with a small block Chevy. 11.5:1 max with ally heads & a cam with plenty of overlap. If the cam is small, err closer towards 10:1.
What fuel would i have to use for that ?? 95 ron or 98-99 ron ??
What cam can anyone recomend to give me a rough rev range from 3000-3500rpm up to around 6500-7000rpm ?? Thanks.
