At the weekend my westy got sick!

Pootling along after a few bursts of acceleration, I started up a hill and the engine started running rough.
It miss fires and wont respond to acceleration, when you ease back it runs smoother but still pops and missfires .

Its a CVH on twin 40's. It only has 5000 miles on the odometer and history to prove. It was a modular kit including engine from westfield and was assembled by Terry Nightingale. SVA in 2000. So although the CVH can be prone to cam wear I would hope this isn't the issue here. (Its my first westy so no jokes about the CVH engine please)

I have checked the leads, the fuel filter appears clear and a friend has checked that the Carbs are ballanced.

Any ideas!!

Its damn annoying given the current weather not to be out there.

Just a thought, have you over- revved it? you may have hit a plug with a piston and closed the plug gap.

Bit more info really needed. what ignition etc are you running? Genrally the CVH is an okay engine and unless it is really knackered in a car like the Westfield is fine.
Things to check are ignition not slipped, the carbs are not loose, and usual plug condition. Low mileage can be a problem as the fuel in the carbs can gum up and block jets.

Last time I had those symptoms it was an HT leads which had slipped from its retainer and rested against the cam pulley, gradually wearing it away.

It could be a number of things - I had a similar thing on my crossflow Locust. After really heavily ragging it, it would splutter, and not accelerate as much as before. I took it to a mate of mine who knows engines, and this is what he thought it could be:

- Fuelling
- Carb jets
- Carb balance
- HT leads
- Ignition coil
- Spark plugs
- Dizzy rotor arm
- Dizzy cap
- Electronic ignition

After replacing a lot of things, and playing with the carbs, we noticed a fragment missing from the rotor arm insulation - although no damage to the metal contact itself. Since it was only that, the dizzy cap or the electronic ignition left, I bought a new one (and dizzy cap) and that cured it. Luckily I didn't have to buy a new electronic ignition system.

Got a CVH myself and had similar problems fitted new ignition module first then went through various things. New dizzy cap caused it to run rough found out that the timing was out due to the cap being slightly different in the manufacture. New upgraded coil Had it rolling road tuned and everything was fine. But had a cut out every now and then when it was hot. usually fired up no prob. Got worse in time, then found the problem! 3 pin connector on the ignition circuit which was shorting out. 5 min fix. Keep that connector in the shed to remind me to check the simple things first. Enjoy the westy wink

Thanks to everyone suggestions, I got a tip from the WSCC forum that cracked it straight away, the locking screw for the venturi tube on one of the carbs has fallen out letting the tube spin in the barrel. Easy fix you would think, but according to Webcon the parts a locking screw and lock nut are unavailable, they have 200 plus back order to Weber.

So if anyone has one spare and will part with it or knows where there is a stock of these please let me know.

Parts No 34710.003, and 64820.006

If you own a set of 40 DCOE's for goodness sake make sure these screws are locktighted in place and you wire them to another part.

So at the moment I am off the road subject to a new part or a trip to a machine shop.

Had a similar problem on a cvh in a quantum, the carb was balanced but it the diaphram had gone. Try another carb to cancel it out.

Wish I had a lathe. Sounds like there's some money to be made here.
