Potential owner question-Anti-Cavitation tank & spare wheel?

Sorry, dumb newbe potential owner questions.. I am hopefully looking at a Caterham for myself this weekend, couple of questions..

1. It has an anti-cavitaion tank fitted - What is this exactly & what does it do? I assume it solves the problem of fuel starvation on trackdays?

2. It has a spare wheel mounted on the rear of the car, I want to remove this as personally I prefer the look without it, plus it saves a bit of weight is removal easy & and replacement of the numberplate too? Will there be any marks/holes in the bodywork left behind?

Anti Cav tank stops the oil becoming aerated. It's sort of a halfway house between the wet sump and dry sump systems and many people reckon it's a minimum requirement for doing trackdays. Essentially it's a tall narrow tank that keeps a head of oil in it and allows any bubbles to disperse before the oil is fed into the engine.

Lots of people have removed the spare wheel carrier. The rails that make it up can easily be cut and blanked off. However you will be left with a hole in the middle of the rear panel where the spare wheel bolted on - some people use this hole to mount the numberplate light. I find the spare wheel carrier very useful for carrying luggage and other stuff but then do a lot of touring in mine.

And others cut off (with pipe cutters – not a hacksaw!) the spare wheel carrier and weld smaller tubes inside so it can be fitted back to the stubs left on the chassis as and when needed. Search the Lotus 7 Club site for details on how to do this.
