These are what you need for everyday use (18" will be too big IMHO)

16" 8J 7 Series Rims (I think you'd probably want 225/50 16 Tyres), suitably period in their appearance with a nice deep dish as per the original metric ones

Looks lovely. As others have said, it will look pretty chav with 18" on it. 15" or 16" period alloys.

Buyers guide in this months PPC.

Dont go for 18" imo they would ruin both the looks and the handling, go for some 15/16" wheels that suit the car.

How dare you undersell the motor!

Its such an elegant, gorgeous looking car. Those old 6's always do something to me. Would it be heresy to suggest putting in a later engine into one?

It certainly would be heresy, the M30 is a lovely engine and more than capable of shiting the vast weight of the 635 around in style yes

My god Im going to have one of those cars

The 18" (designed for the E39)wheels will fit no problem(adding spigot rings so they fit snug on the E24 hub).I have two 635s and they are both running on 18" (Rondells and Alpinas) and they give the car that extra yumminess.Only certain wheels will right though if you don't want to fall into the "Chav" look.

PS: If you need any advice let me know.

Great, you're 56 miles away, and I might nip up there this summer for a photo shoot. The car looks great, and if you stick some 18" Alpinas it would look even sexier!
