Hi, my Griff needs new oil.........engine, diff, gearbox, cv joints, clutch. Managed to buy Mobil 1 0/w40 for the 5.15 JE engine at Porsche. Local dealer Jaguar/ TVR only deals Castrol which leaves me with questions. Appreciate some advise if Castrol is an good alternative oil type for the brutal TVR Griffith 500
I've been reading about Castrol use for the gearbox as it has better lubrication eff for the gears esspecially 5th gear. Is this still the case?

Is it ok to use?

75W-90 CASTROL SNYTHRAX in the gearbox?

Which Castrol slip limited Diff oil is ok for use in the GNK diff; service manual states Mobilube HD 90/ SAE 85W90?

Brakes and Clutch oil alternative for Mobil SAEJ1703?

Cv joints grease alternative for Mobil special NLGI 2?

Some help is much appreciated.

IIRC the 75W-90 is too thick for the LT77, the 75W-80 was advised..

0W-40 is too thin, I thought Mobil 15W-50 was available on the continent (which many of us use).

Have you tried contacting Eric or some of the other locals - they seem pretty resourceful.

Origionally the LT77 was specified to have auto transmision fluid because of a design fault, that meant that the syncro mesh rings could not deal with the thicker gearbox oil. So instead of fixing the fault, Range Rover specified the thinner oil, and then wondered why the gearboxes failed!. If you run a modern synthetic 75-80 gearbox oil, it will work reasonably well, but you do need to be carefull for the first few gear changes, until the oil thins slightly. There is a synthetic designed especially for these gearboxes.

That's good info, thanks. Will change the oil to mobil 1 motorsport 15W/50 for the engine to keep it in 1 piece.
Still the gearbox and diff oils are a bit of a questionmark. If it is Castrol oil what is the specific name and coding for the diff, gearbox and cv joints?
Sorry for these "silly questions" .....Thanks Baz

Hi Mark, thanks for the help and advise. Difflock Evolution 1 Fully Synthetic 5 speed Gear Oil, anybody else any comment using this in the T5 gearbox before I'm going to buy it?
TVR Griffith needs new lubrication cards as the orginal is completely out of date........

Looks like the gearbox and engine oil is sorted.
The GKN diff oil and CV grease questions remain open.

Thanks, baz

I can only comment on engine oil but my independent garage of choice uses Castrol RS - I think it's 10/60 - and it works very well giving decent oil pressure. TVRs are not Range Rovers but the RV8 engine is not a high-tech, close tolerance, revvy riceburner.

The LSD oil is an 85/90 weight, but specifically for LSDs, various have been advised Millers/redline/Castrol IIRC.

For the CV joints I believe there are modern synthetic substitutes which are much longer lasting that you can investigate.

Im specifiying gearbox oil for the LT77 (and R380), not the T5 gearbox. I dont know when TVR switched gearboxes.

My fault, I specifically quoted the LT77 because I wasn't sure which one he had..

Ok, that means I'm still not sure which oil to buy for the T5 gearbox and GKN Diff. Not all that easy these oils......

Matt 350 did mention the Castrol 75W/90 for the T5 box in another post. Is this the correct oil for this gearbox....he claims it gives better lubrication.

Which Castrol or mobil oil for the GKN diff???

Thanks, baz

Ford specify ATF for the T5, same as the the Rover box, you've got a T5 if reverse is on the same side as first whereas the Rover box is on the opposite side.

ATF in the T5 is still a poor oil choice as it breaks down under heavy loads. I've used the Castrol 75W/90 for several years in both boxes with good results, its only downside is that when stone cold the first few shifts are slow and notchy. However once its done 3-4 miles it lightens up and when fully warm gives and excellent shift.

see

Castrol also do a full synthetic the SMX-S

http://129.35.64.91/bpglis/lubtds.nsf/technicaldat...

I also used this with good results but it is harder to find

Its slightly confusing as Castrol states its a 80/90W oil but the viscosity measurements show it to be slightly thinner than the Synthrax when cold and slightly thicker when hot

Thanks Matt, will follow your advise and use the castrol in the T5 box. Do you by a chance know which Castrol oil can be used in the GKN lim slip Diff? Thanks Bas

Sorry, what you say here confuses me not little...I've got a griffith model '96 and i've always supposed i had a T5 trans BUT my first gear is up left instead my reverse is down right...thus i have a rover box?????????

Also i've always used a standard ATF oil as recommended by TVR, even if i've always thought these oils for auto trans looked REALLY thin...

What to do?

Dave, R-380 box.......is that a Holland box? I'm 95% sure my 98 griff has a T5 fitted even without your guide above.
Guys thanks for all the help and confusion. I'm going to fill the gearbox with Castrol 75w/90, diff with Castrol SAF-XJ and engine with mobil 1 motorsport 15/w50......

People like me need links like this:
