730d - Yes Or No?

I am seeking advice.
As a lover of cars i am facing a compromise.
I have a company supplied midi 4x4 which I have tired of and a privately owned 911 Cabriolet which you can see on my profile picture link (not sure that I've done that right - but if you click on the black area it takes you to the webshots image).
I plan to sell the Porsche and opt out of the company scheme.
I would like a smart comfortable cruiser that I can put 20k miles a year on to and enjoy driving - I love the 911 but I can no longer justify keeping it as I only use it sparingly but have really enjoyed the driving and the ownership experience (my wife hasn't and wants a new kitchen!).
The diesel engined 730 appeals to me and with the change from a Kitchen (out of the Porsche Sale) I could stretch to a used car for maybe £32k.
I have colleagues who are running and have run 6 Series & 5 Series Beemers and have suggested that the running costs on the diesel 7 could be quite high; one guy was even pursuaded in to a 530d from a 730d by a representative of BMW for this reason, and another, with a 640, seemed to be in and out of the garage for regular service type maintenance on different elements of the car every six weeks (he does do 40k/year mind you!) and suggested the 7 would be the same.
Your collective comments and advice would be most welcome.....!!!

I have written much about the 730d over the years on here as I run a large fleet of them, so if you want to have a bit of a search through......
But they are a fantastic mile muncher, for £32/35k you will get yourself into a late 2006/early 2007 with not many miles, they all come with reasonable spec in them but you have to get the correct colour/wheel combo. Dark blue with cream is about the best with 19s.

I dont understand how the running costs would be any higher than say a 530d or 535d, other than it might suffer heavier depreciation....As a lover of cars i am facing a compromise.

Do you really need such a "large beast"?. I have the new 635D Sport and I am finding it very quick and economical (avg 38 MPG).

She looks beautiful and the mpg is excellent.
Unfortunately, I don't think it wouldn be practical with children etc, not that my 911 is, but that's why i have also run a mid size 4x4 on the company.
I like the idea of the space and the sumptuous cabin in the 7, and if I am going to spend 6-700 hrs in a car each year for the next 4 years the BMW is very tempting, despite the semi-negative maintenance feedback from my colleagues.
If it came with a soundproof electronic glass partition where you could de-shoe children, hand out boxing gloves, lock the doors, press a button and forget about them until you reach your destination I would buy one new this afternoon!
I love them really, despite the constant threat of handlebar scratches and sporting projectiles around my vehicles.

It would seem the 7 series or an A8 4.2TDI sport (which I had before the RS4 I just sold ). The A8 TDI 4.2 is some beast and it will return 38MPG @ 80+MPH, you should have a look and test drive one.She looks beautiful and the mpg is excellent.
