i have a 1989 esprirt turbo nonchargecooled car and all of a sudden today it started breaking down badly under hard acceleration, the boost gauge goes up but the engine keeps on stumbling, its fine at low engine speed just not under hard accel.i checked all the vacuam hoses they all seem fine, anyone know my problem?? could it be clogged fuel filter? thanks.P.S. headlight motors from the years 88-94 sunbird work perfectly on my vehicle same part!!

Hi,

Sorry to hear of your troubles. It sounds suspiciously to me like your timing belt has slipped.

Eliminate this possibility first. To do so, loosen the spark plugs and put the car in 5th gear. Manually push the car 'til the dots on the cam pulleys line up (if you run out of room, put car in neutral, push backward, re-engage 5th gear and push forward again).

Then, check the TDC mark on the flywheel against the timing pointer through the viewing port in the trumk floor. If it isn't right on the TDC mark, you have slipped a tooth or two. The car will still run, but very badly. DO NOT RUN THE CAR until this has been checked. If it were to slip any more, it's Au Revoir Mssrs. Valves and Pistons. Let me know how you come out. Happy Motoring! ...Jim'85TE

Check if the spark plugs are fouled with fuel. This sounds familiar.........

Hi,

A car with a belt which has just slipped one ot two teeth will idle well as the adavnce has not fully come on. Under load at higher RPMs is where you'll notice the difference. Ask me how I know this. Happy Motoring! Jim'85TE

i checked the plugs they are fine, also jim i did check the timing i had the engine out last winter and just freshened things up,like changing cam belt and putting a new tensioner on to,so that was the first thing i looked at,i thought maybe it loosened up but its fine, the car is behaving almost like the fuel is being shut off when the turbo cuts in,any more advise, thanks guys

Hi,

Since you're certain that plugs/timing are not at issue, try pulling the battery cable to reset the ECU and see what effect that has. Happy Motoring...Jim'85TE
