Central Locking / Opeing Doors on Audi A3

Just bought myself a 1999 Audi A3 1.8T, and have found a niggling fault that I did not pick up when viewing the car.
Most of the time the car cannot be opened from the inside on the passenger side using the interior handle. Winding the window down to open from the outside is the only option. This cannot be to do with a mechanical connection, as sometimes this works.
Also this morning, the car couldn't be opened from the door handle on the exterior of the drivers side, yet was fine from inside. This also "cured" itself later on.
Does anyone know whether there is likely to be something simple that is causing this, and / or can advise a cure.
