After stripping yet more out of the engine bay today (hoses, pipes & rad), I found some interesting bodges.
The previous owner or the garage that MOT'd his car decided to twist the split n/s steering rack gaitor round and cable tie it, to get it through and MOT nono

Also found some serious deposits of rust inside the water pipes

It seem the more I strip off this car, the more I feel I need to take off more and renew it.

After reading Tims posts on Cerb brakes, I'm not looking forward seeing what horrors lie there either yikes

More pics to come as the restoration continues....

I know the feeling ..... I have a car that had one of those type of previous owners as well.

Thankfully I'm getting near the end of replacing bits (I hope).

You look to have the makings of a great car there, though.

Tell me about it, I've just removed the rad and aircon matrix, thought the rad was ok until I removed it, all rotten on the bottom due to leaves, muck and water sitting in the fibre glass tub beneath the airbox.

Nearly ready to lift the body off now. At least everything is fixable, nothing complicated. And its good to know these cars are being bought by people for long term onwership and not afraid to get their hands dirty. I was the minority a couple of years ago.

I just keep thinking how good it'll be when its finished.

Group hug everyone. Sigh and move on to the next rusty bolt rolleyes

Rich.

Commiserations, I spent 8 hours on it on saturday amongst other things cleaning up the front chassis back to the outriggers. My back is killing me and my brain has gone rusty.

I do think I've been quite lucky so far with the front end strip down. Everything came away without too much drama - including the cap heads that hold the ball joints which are supposed to be a real pig. Trackcar warned me off touching them but once I'd got the "kill the rust" bug I just kept going smile

The swan neck water pipes are in remarkably good shape. A fair bit of external surface rust and pitting but once cleaned up and repainted they are nice shiny new black. The coolant rails had a bit of rust around some of the cap heads and were they quite badly rusted where the hoses were attached. But once again they cleaned up fairly well and the silver POR15 doesn't look too bad.

Even the steering rack hoses (that bolt on at the pinion bit) which looked appalling were just bad surface rust. Cleaned up with metal ready and silver POR15 applied. The steering UJs are shot and one track rod end is very notchy - so all being replaced. The rack itself is fine. The notchy steering was I think a combination of the UJs and badly set Bermman adjuster (is that the right term for it? - the grub screw on the front of the rack)
One of the ball joints was also pretty rough so replacing them all as well (thanks to Tims detective work finding the alternatives). The suspension bushes look fine - no nasty off centre bushes like the one shown on Tims site. I'll leave the powerflex upgrade for another year - just doing the ARB bushes.

What is taking the time is the strip down, clean up and repaint of all the brackets and such like - PAS reservoir, receiver drier, ARB, condenser etc etc. Hopefully the POR15 and stainless bolts will keep the rust monster at bay for a while. (Stainless hose clips and nuts, bolts, washers bill is around £100 yikes)

No doubt I will have to do a body off at some point. But I have removed exhaust system and heat shield and crawled around the chassis and can't find anything major up there. A couple of the welds starting to show rust which I will clean up and paint. But nothing horrendous. Just the usual fried paint on the rails under the manifolds which I'm doing whilst the manifolds are off.

So far not too bad for a 98 car.

(Apologies for the war and peace - sat on a train to London very bored smile )

Loads.

But most of them are stored on a hard-drive in my office and not on this.

Actually I was posting a lot more pics of jobs on mine last year than I am this year.

I must get back into the habit of posting them as I get through the work.
