Sorry if this is a stupid question but is it possible to get a 2 or 3 speed auto box to fit a VAG 1.8 20v T engine to help lower my times

Its just I dont think that my gearbox is going to last that long with the engine mods over winter so just looking for options

Are you running 10's or what ?

Yes, you can get an auto to fit most cars, although expect to may a few grand.

I know a friend has made enquirys for his car, but overall cost would probably be about £7-8k he reckoned for an auto conversion.

AFAIK, James with the MK2 Golf that has ran a few 10's is on a standard box. There are places that make gearkits etc for the VW boxes.

These guys are in the Czech Republic.

I have run mid 11s last year but have I have got alot more extra power this year plus nitrous.

I have talked to James and he uses a VR6 gear box and sets off in 2nd gear.

Just trying to find out what options I have got.

Power is obviously one thing. Traction is another.

An auto will be a very very expensive option, but undoubtedly the best if drag racing is all the car gets used for. It'll be the US for that one though.

Failing that, a regular uprated gearset, dogbox would be the next most sensible option. Probably £3k or thereabouts ( + a clutch )

The auto will be kinder on driveshafts too....if they are a problem.

It's fixable...

Try http://www.jericoperformance.com/

Only issue is the manual shift and whether you can repeat close enough to achieve predictable ETs, but at least you don't have to dip the clutch to change gears.

Ahhhh, then Id imagine you could do auto a lot cheaper. I assumed the 1.8T fitment would be fwd.

What sort of box do you want ? there are plenty of boxes around that can handle rwd power.
Dog or synchro.

And what price range ? Although I dont think too many will be a simple bolt on fit, and will require some adaptation.

Or if you are lucky, check Dellow or Castlemaine Rod Shop in Aus, as they do loads of conversion bellhousings etc.

Ahh...so it is fwd gearbox !!!!

going round in circles here lol

You could try that Czech place, and see if they can help ?? Or hunt around for any local places that might be able to make a gearset.

its not. it mounted east west.

have you thought about going to the US for a gearset?? they have some pretty mental cars out there (heard of a VR6 with a GT42 on it the other day!).

I will try the US for gearsets thanks

Well the little monster is just about to have a owens developments garret turbo fitted and 630 cc injectors so it should produce around 430 bhp when mapped !

Wont teh boxes handle that sort of power ?

You could try Elite transmissions in the UK. I think they do some of the TVR/Glebe stuff ?
Might be able to make some gears.

I have been informed that they handle upto 400bhp, I am just looking at options for when/ if it brakes.

A lot depends of other factors too. Usage, loadings, weight of vehicle etc etc

Standard T56's are rated around 450lbft. I know plenty of people pushing 6-700lbft +, with some even more and they dont break.

Although some boxes factory builds are better than others. Id have thought the VW stuff to be fairly good ?

Cheapest option is no doubt just to have a standard spare for when disaster does strike.

Martyn,
A powerglide or TH350/400 would be the normal solution, but the problem comes in mating it to a VAG lump - it's not a traditional fitment and none of the B&M or similar adaptor kits are available off the shelf. The other problem is space, I've seen a few piccies of the Polo, and I cant see a way of it fitting.

So - as mentioned above, an upgrade of the internals would possibly be the best route at the moment. Remembering that power produced wont necessarily stress parts too much when it's propelling a fairly light mass. Very nice bit of kit BTW smile

I never really thought of it like that, as i am hopefully going to make the car lighter during the year hopefully the gear box will cope .

Cheers
