What do you want to find? Tell me and then we can see whether it's the search function or you.

Have you tried the advanced search?

Bear in mind this website forum is bespoke and doesn't use off the shelf forums like vbulletin that falls over if a few hundred people are online, we have thousands online at any one time here and millions of page hits per hour.

Keywords in thread titles would be a start.

It appears to ignore thread titles, which isn't fab.

Nice one. You can even narrow it down to Gassing Station with:
site:www.pistonheads.com/gassing

That does work very well, but of course Google isn't quite up to date - if you are looking for something recent it may not have been spidered yet. Equally I don't know how often the site search is updated or if it runs on the live DB (I would assume not).

I'm not saying it's brilliant and I certainly agree about the thread titles, especially with repost police hiding round every corner. It's not the worst though and many people just don't know how to search the internet.

To add to the above:

The search database is updated nightly and finishes around 4.30am, so you will only be able search for anything before that time, and anything on the current day will not be searchable.

Searching our records is the most power sapping and extensive thing that can happen on the system and thus we create the backup database and allow searching on that so it doesn't affect the performance of the site (I know, it is slow already.. but it would be worse if we didnt do this).

We will look at implementing better searching over the coming year, but our priorities remain speeding up the whole site as a whole.

Hope that clears a few things up thumbup
