Clutch Price (fitted)

Hi there,

I've been quoted for a new clutch and flywheel. I've been told there is no point in changing the clutch, without doing the flywheel as well. £300 for the parts, £550 all in for the job; that's the quote. Does that sound right?

Unless the flywheel's damaged from having run with a clutch plate worn down to the rivets or exhibits some other symptoms replacing the flywheel is not necessary. How many miles/what car/what are the symptoms?

178,000 miles, not sure when clutch was last replaced, beginning to show lots of clutch slip in all gears. The flywheel job seems to be doubling the price. The car can only be worth about a thousand quid at retail, anyway!

Ask them how the flywheel becomes worn. Unless the flywheel forms one of the surfaces against which the friction plates of the clutch act, I can't see how it would get worn at all.

ETA: I've found a fitting guide for the E36. It looks like the flywheel is used as a surface against which the friction plate works, so you will need to get it replaced.
