Hi Pistonhead people.

I am looking to take on a junior developer to help in our development team. I will try and be 100% honest with this advert as the job wont suit everyone.

The good bits.

Cloud Amber specialise in traffic management systems for local authorities. We integrate in to traffic lights, car parks, roadworks, incident data, ANPR, CCTV, weather stations... and help authorities manage traffic more effectively. This can be done by changing the phasing of lights, putting up messages on road signs and other stuff that goes on behind the scenes. If it sounds interesting, but at the same time boring then I would have to agree!

A spin off form this are regional and national travel portals that we are developing ( http://www.ukvoyager.info , http://bedfordshire.utmc.info ) to inform consumers about road speeds and delays to their journeys.

All of our development is done in the UK by specialised small software houses or contracted individuals (currently about 7 people). Core source is common throughout and shared across all parties. The software is 98% in C# with some libraries in C++. We are using .Net v2.0, v3.0 and just starting to migrate to v3.5. All software is deployed on to hosted windows server and ASP.NET environments.

We don't use offices, we don't commute, we don't sit in cubicles sending emails to people we sit next to. Instead we work from home, MSN, Skype and net meet when we can. You too will work from home, remote desktop & VPN to wherever is required. You will work independently, given outcomes to achieve and left alone to achieve them. We are very much a sucess and outcome driven business, not paper pushing, process driven, ISO quality hell.

The real bits.

As with everything there are swings and roundabouts. If you are a 9-5 person then this is not for you. The end of the stick you get will be rough at times. As we are a new and young company the deadlines will be tight. Some evenings and weekend work will be required depending on the work and the business needs. You need to be flexible and open minded or you joining us wont work.

This role is a junior position. As such most of your time will probably be spent:
  • installing software
  • configuring software
  • testing software
  • diagnosing faults
  • finding bugs
  • fixing bugs
  • minor feature changes
Experiance not required, neither are letters after your name. That said, we would like to see a sample of your work and go in to some depths about what/how you have done what you did. This could be something you done in your own time or a University project.
Most of all we are looking for a hard working, open minded, motivated individual who will fit in and thrive in our culture.

Future

You will work on some exciting and well designed products, work with a friendly and motivated team and join a company only currently three strong. Because of this the opportunities are limitless. Work hard, achieve results and you could well be a key member in a few years. We are looking to take the business forward with a team of motivated high achievers and quickly grow the business over the next 3 to 5 years.

What can you expect in return?
  • up to £25k
  • 25 days holiday
  • Laptop + stuff
  • Fancy phone
If this sounds like a position you would be interested then drop me an email at recruitment@cloudamber.com or ring me on 07917 704 145. You have to be able to work in the UK or already have a work permit.

To all those recruitment consultants:
your phone call would have said:
Thanks, but for the time being I will let this (and other adverts) run and see what candidates. Yes, I know you have some cracking candidates but for the time being I will see what comes in the direct route. Yes, I will let you know if I change my mind.
Good luck all.

Hello,

I use mainly asp.net/vb.net sql etc bt not C# specifically.

Would this be an issue?

As long as you don't mind converting and working in C# 100% of your time. Yes, ASP.NET is good, but in C#.

Can I just say thanks for the really good job description. I wish all potential employers were that honest, it would save both them and the potential candidates a lot of hassle!
