there is an awesome lap of monaco in car with senna around 88/89 on youtube. its pretty incredible, one handed cornering whlist grabbing gears, the stuff of legends...

I was lucky enough to be at the 1992 Monaco race - it was like being at a football match as the cheering was so loud.

The Williams of Mansell had a Renault engine so the French were really going for it.

Great memories.

Does anyone know the lap times?

With the reduction in machanical grip from grooved tyres and narrower cars it's possible that around Monaco the times would be similar. Although it'll be difficult to compare because St Devote and the swimming pool have been reconfigured to be quicker.

Pole in 1992 was 1'19.495, Alonso's in 2007 was a 1'15.726.

But, as you say, hard to compare directly.

In 2007 the fastest lap at Silverstone was 2 seconds faster than it was in 1992.

Williams always seem up for cool stuff, time for a race between Mansell and Nico Rosberg's rides.

That, right there, is two guys at the top of their game! So close yet no touching, not barging.
But can you imagine the FIA stewards nowadays watching Senna's 'lines' keeping the Williams behind him?! They'd throw a fit! (No blocking my arse!)

Yep, there was some great racing back then. But also sone very boring races. If a driver got out in front, they would totally dominate. Mansell at Silverstone in 91 springs to mind- he was so much quicker then anyone.

I started watching F1 when I was quite young, and I remember my Dad explainign to me that, although a driver did not cross the line first he would have done, so they gave him the race win. I always remember this is being unfair, as it meant Mansell came 2nd instead of 1st.

But I cannot think this is true. Is my memory getting bad?

Alonso holding off Schumi in Imola 2006 and the same thing at Turkey 2007. Schumi returning the favour at Imola a year later and Alonso went half a lap wheel to wheel with Schumi at Hungary in 2007.

Lewis taking over Mansell's mantle as Mr Entertainment and demon overtaker on the race track and the mystique that is Kimi.

I'd say we're back in the 'golden age' because we now have better strength in depth after a nearly a decade of Schumi making the opposition look stupid.

I'm not one of those people who remembers lots of racing incidents, I think I can only remember one - Mansell overtaking Senna coming out of the tunnel, but I've relived that and told the story a good dozen times giving people rides around the circuit in a friend's Atom.

And here's the problem with Ferrari fans. They'd rather see domination than an interesting season.

I was chuffed to bits when Kimi won last season, he deserved it, but I'm glad he had to work for it.
