what oil for 335 diesel

going to oil change my 335d, phoned the dealers this morning and they want £120 for the oil I buy loads of oil for vw/audis and thats only £18 for 5 litres of the genuine stuff from Audi so feel £120 is a bit of a p%ss take

does anyone know what spec the oil for a 335d is ? the guy in parts thought it was castrol but didnt know the spec

You need an oil that meets BMW's Long Life 04 spec which rules out many. This ebay link is probably about the best price you'll get: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&am... You can order various quantities up to 20l cans.

looks like its 5/30 which is the same spec as the longlife Audi oil which is a fraction of the price

I think the particulate filter drives the requirement for the Long Life 4 spec which is what drives up the price. I'm not sure what is or isn't the in LL-04 oil that keeps the particulate filter happy.

Castrol Edge 5w30 fully synth turbo diesel oil.


Make sure you check correctly as per the manual and not to overfill. I know its weird to warm car thru for 6 miles then check oil but thats what the manual says. YOU WILL overfill if you top up from checking from cold where it seems to read lower.

Oil does expand when it heats up and depending upon the shape of the sump the level can rise noticeably.

Every car i have ever owned, when oil checked with car stone cold for over 12 hours, the oil level always read higher than after it had been run and checked. where it would always be lower as oil was still in the head etc and would take a while to drain to the sump (hours). But with modern BMW its the other way round?!

Good point; I was particulalry thinking of dry-sumped 911s. Give it 10 minutes after a hot shut-off and the vast majortiy of the oil will have drained back into the sump. Then compare that with the level stone cold.

on the 335d its a manual check. Open the bonnet and the dipstick is quite visable.
