Hi guys

I want to try once and for all to solve my intermittant headlight lift problem. Can anyone confirm which relays are for the lift motors and dipped / main beam function:

Assuming that the two rows are A (top) and B (bottom) and numbering from left to right 1 to 6 can anyone let me know which ones I should change?

Also any thoughts on the best replacement type and part numbers?

Thanks in advance

Chris

There was a thread on here a month or so back with lots of info on relays and layouts. I'll see if I can find it. In the meantime here is a diagram of the relay layout on my 88 350i.

ears

When the chap was looking at my car on Sunday the driver side pod refused to lift banghead

First time it's happened to me in over 3 years of ownership.

I've managed to wind them up now but when I was fidding the motor itself sprung in to action & went up & down, so I know the motor is ok.

Wyn, take out the headlight, this will give access to the wiring. All connections are bullet type which need to be cleaned, copperslip'd then hey presto!you'll never have a floppy one again.

If you are playing with the relays be very careful of 2 things.

1. The centre pin numbering, as there are subtle differences in some.
2. When you push the relay in it is very easy for the pins to push the female connector out of the back of the socket.

My drivers side pod is refusing to lift at the mo. I've managed to raise it, but when I was raising it it sprung in to life & lifted & went back down, so I'd like to identify the correct relays for the motors so I can swap them to test. Here's a pic of my relays, any idea which ones they are? Ta.

Ignore the red circle.

Wyn it's a red herring to suspect the relay and not the motor on this one. A pound to a pinch of salt that if it "springs back to life" then the motor needs stripping down for further investigation. Probably you have a sticky/worn brush or the copper strip has a bad/dirty contact. Check out Wedg1es web site for info.

Just swapped the relays, still the same. I'll check & clean the contacts on the motor tomorrow. scratchchin
