This morning, on my way into work on the bike a chap in a Metro sideswiped me.

Whilst a little shocked, the bike appeared to have sustained no damage as it was more of a 'bush' past than anything with any force.

I looked back (in anger) at the guy in the Metro, to be greeted by the sight of 4 large chaps. They were gesticulating that I should move on and the passenger was saying "Go,go". There was no damage to me or the bike - so I went?

Now I'm at work, I'm attacked by paranoia that I should have stopped, exchanged details etc. even though I was the 'victim' in the incident.

Any advice? Should I ring the local cop-shop to be safe? I have no details other than the colour/make of the car.

Probably best to pop round to the station and speak informally to the desk sergeant.. If I had 4 burly blokes gesticulating at me I probably woudn't stop for a chat.. anyway by the sounds of it it wasn't your fault either.

Cheers,
Matt.

Do it. It does not matter that you do not have any details of the car.
You have to report the incident to a Police Station (should be the nearest one at the time) or a Police Constable as soon as practicable and in any case within 24 hours.

You have to go personally to the station. You cannot do it over the phone. This is a matter of self preservation in case they have damage and your registration number!

If you are contacted later by a Police request for information and are subject of Traffic offence enquiries, the fact you have reported it and there is a record at a Police station will give you plenty of irons in the fire to play with.

If you do nothing, you are up the creek without a paddle!

Defo ring the cop shop. Explain what happened. Even if you're ok and you don't hear anything more make sure you get your side of the story in first just in case they try and fabricate something for an insurance claim.

Have called Thames Valley Police (accident was in Reading - any of you lot trafcops for TV? )

They were very nice about it and advised that I come in and make a report. Trouble is, I work in London so I can't just 'pop-in'. They said that as long as it was within 24 hours of the 'incident'. I'll go in and make a report tonight on the way home to be safe.

They also mentioned informing the insurance company on the basis of a no-claim report? This sounds like a good idea too dontcha think?

As long as they don't 'load' the policy, like they do if you have an accident on a protected-no claims policy.

I asked about this and if nothing happens after about 3 months, they ditch the file.

Go into any station stig, they can take details. You have fulfilled your part of the process then.
Mike.

Thanks for your help and advice chaps.

Went to station and filed report no problems. Also transpired that the lane I was in was designated for bus/bike/taxi so no filtering issue

Meeting some of the dregs waiting to sign on in the station gave me nothing but sympathy for the BiB. That and wathcing Road Wars on Sky last night
