When did the battery move from the back to the front of the car?

was it late 1990 with the upgraded ecu 2.5 - 2.7 ?

Battery moved in 1992, there were a number of other improvements made on the 92 cars also which is why I was keen to avoid pre 92 cars when I bought mine....

By no means discount the earlier cars if you can get a nice one for a fair price as many of the issues will have likely been rectified by owners over the years. Most important fact you've probably heard is know what you’re looking for and buy on condition !

When I was looking I had some very specific criteria which took a while to meet, some of which were as follows:-

92' onwards RHD
TS preferred but would live with TB
Red or Black with Crema interior
Recent cambelts and service
Circa 30,000 miles or less
Full history with all dealer or recognised indie stamps.
As stock as possible
No accidents, imports or anything with 'a story'
Best condition possible

You'd be surprised how difficult it was to meet all of the above criteria and I had to pay extra to do it. If you look at the cars for sale at the moment you'd still have to pay upwards of £25k to meet all of the above.

Saying that, the more I've learned about the 348 the less I'd be put off about a higher mileage car (upto 50k ish) as long as all the services were done on time etc. 348's seem to take the miles well if looked after and you can’t always trust the Odo reading anyway on older Fcars...!!

Good luck ! I believe Suga's 348 Spider is still for sale and looks a steal at the price he's asking...

Are the later cars that much better that its vital to go for a post 92 car.

I've driven lots of F355s but never been in a 348 - I'm told by various people that the 348 is more twitchy and harder to drive which is fine.

It seems like most of the cars for sale are 1991 - would they be not worth looking at for reliability issues ect.

I do fancy one next as they are about half the money of a 355 but my budget would probably be upto 23k ( i don't mind lhd ).

I would buy the car mainly on condition and history rather than age. I'm not bothered about the later cars or the GTB/S being quicker as thats missing the point and would stick with what i've got or go for a 911 Turbo.

The car wouldn't be driven that hard it would just be something to cherish and use when the suns out.

I also have contacts in the trade that could work on the car.

Basically if i bought a pre 92 car would it be a bad move ?

Looks like the kinda of list i'm drawing up at present. I realise that there are probably some great examples of the earlier cars but given that the price difference isn't too large I think i'll hold out for the right one.

Not sure about the spider, how good are the roofs?

I just look at it as more to go wrong ? plus the hoods are manual.

Plus points are the spiders are late GTS/B specs with 320 hp.

There aren't many around either.

Its a tough decision.

Manual hood is a HUGE positive IMO. i.e it won't ever break down. Is that what you meant?

I prefer it.

On the subject of easy to drive, the 348 is a lot heavier on everything, steering, clutch, gearbox. 355 was a much more useable car, but saying that the 348 was more involved, and felt more like a race car (especially with the noise from the Tubi). I just personally preffered the looks and noise of the 355. Would love a 348 as well though for those days where you're you just fancy a tussle with the car.

Provided they are adjusted and lubricated correctly spider roofs are excellent and actually more water tight than TS’s hard top. Mine has never shown any signs of leaking even in heavy rain. Also, as they are manual there is little to go wrong. However the canvas can wear around the frame with a lot of use. Replacement skins are available for around £800 - £1000.

Good Luck

if it was me buying a £25K car I would opt for a 328 much cheaper to run, cambelts done in car, you can pick lovely cars up at that money, more easily obtained parts, a lot of 348s sat around outside for a while in the early 90s cos Ferrari UK could not sell them, 328s tended to be looked after because they were bought for upto £150K in the overs heydays of the 80s, and they had the same bits as the 348 aircon, ABS etc.

I think Suga has sold the spider now.

I've just bought a '90, but was looking for a post '92.
In reality, I was only looking post 92 because people had said that early ones had handling problems etc etc.
The fact of the matter is, for me, I don't know any different, I drove pre and post 92 models, and to be blunt, I couldn't tell the difference!
Granted I wasn't pushing them hard, but at the end of the day, this is my first ferrari, I won't be driving it like a knob - so I'd like to think that twitchyness isn't even going to come into it!!

I'm more than happy with my '90 model I've got. it's got the spacers on the rear to widen the track to that of the same as the later models.

Condition was a priority to me, so I overlooked the age of the car in the end, and condition won over - and I'm damn glad I did!!

That is what i will do - as you say you don't go out in a 348 to see how sideways you can go or how many Subarus you can beat.

Its all about the sense of occasion when driving a Ferrari and if it brakes then at least you can sit in the garage with a glass of red wine and look at it.

You've been nipping around the corner to spy on me again, haven't you? wink

I'm fitting the decat pipes next week. Once they're on I'll drop round and take you for a spin biggrin

Damn - you've caught me !!!

Can't wait to hear her with the pipes on.

Had 15 mins in mine last night - think its fully sorted now ?

Give me a shout if you go for a spin.

Its a bit too slippy in the evenings at the minute for any real driving.
