If I where to purchase a new Caterham, built by a renowned specialst and sold to me unregistered as an R400, would I simply be able to register it as an R400 and receive a V5 with this stated. Or would it be a "kit car" definition of some sort? What do I need to have on paper/in mt posession before registering to make sure the car in question is indeed an "R400"??

Presumably you are talking about the car on the classified forum?

Looking at the V5 document of my R400, the only reference to the "R400" model is from the VIN number and the engine number. The engine reference clearly states xxx-R400 on the end whereas the VIN number has the R4 reference in the middle. Have a look here for the meanings : http://7faq.com/owbase/ow.asp?ChassisNumbers

....except it is not, and never will be, a genuine R400...I think I've seen this car at Hyperion...is the chassis indeed brand new Finchy?...

its value is right in the ballpark for an R400 or a very nice R500...but when the purchase comes to sell it, he may run the risk of the new owner not wanting to pay the going rate for an R400 for it....

Er, don't the "R" series have a plaque on the dash stating they are R400/R500 etc? Sure they have carbon wings as well! Looks a tidy bit of kit but calling it an R400 cos its got an R400 engine could be construed as artistic licence. Or have I missed the point?

The R400's do not have a plaque on the dash at all as they are not a limited edition model (same as R300's) and not all R400's have the carbon fibre pack as its a standard option that if unticked, saved the buyer several hundred £'s with the build cost. This is exactly the same as the new R400C too.

The chassis reference is the only reliable ID

The current R400 (duratec) does have carbon cycles in the basic spec. The questions I have about this car is does it have an R400 chassis plate? is it a new chassis? if it has a used engine and a used chassis how will it get an 08 plate?

Cant be regd as 2008 as it is not. No cert of newness. Age plate issued by the DVLA will correspond to the oldest major componant on the car eg chassis or engine or parts thereof.....either way the local office will probalbly want to inspect it before issuing a number.

Speak to your local DVLA office nad have them confirm to you in writing the procedure they will adopt for registering the car......not every office will work the same believe it or not.

Agree that it will not fetch R400 money as a "totally new build".

Be very sure that you are saisfied with the history of all componants, I am sure minister and arch could help here.

Best of luck.
