Today i drove from Liverpool to Redcar and must have seen over 2 dozen MR2s along the way. Coming back i must have seen even more Z4s. In a journey of over 300 miles round trip i didnt see 1 Lotus. The funny thing is that when you pull up alongside these cars the drivers sit there all smug thinking they are driving a "sports car" especially when im alongside in my Focus Estate that has never seen a bucket and sponge.
The point of this post is.........i dont really know except that i am pleased to own a proper sports car that cant be classed as a clitoris car.biggrin

I must have passed 4 S2 on my commute to work this morning. Set off at 07:20 and drove to the M56 then headed down it to chester and 3 miles on the other end to the office.

This is obviously not the norm as I usually have to take evil eye looks from MGF owners before I casually pull away from them without any real effort.

tongue out Have driven a mates Mk1 MR2 I'd certainly class it as a sportscar, more fun to drive than you seem to think. Sure its a fair bit heavier than an Elise (at 980kg) and much slower, but for the money they're hard to beat. Similar story with MX5's, they may be cheap, slowish and often driven by posers but no real PHer would deny they're a sportscar.

I would agree - I did have a Mk1 Mr2 for a number of years (supercharged the bh cool) MX5 are very good but you never see them "Driven", that is why I find them dissapointing. The Mk3 Mr2 is also a good car. The Mk2 Mr2 is rubbish, (good GT, bad sports car). I had a Honda CRX Mk3 (Del-sol) for a while and loved it. a 1.6 vtec with 160bhp made it fun. It just never went wrong...

When I first got my s2 I remember keeping my eyes open for weeks and not seeing another one, I then stuck a post up here in the North East clan to ask if anyone else has one. Since then I've come to learns there's dozens of them in the area and have since met many of them, but day to day driving its still fairly rare we come across each other.

I would class "rare" as something that i dont see very often. So yes i would class the Lotus as rare.

I agree its a great feeling knowing you own a Lotus but I certainly wouldn't agree with looking down on the MR2 or MX5, both great fun in there own ways, its the posers that ruin them, just like all cars all the way up to Ferrari.

Strange post. Actually the MR2 MK1 is one of the least common cars nowadays.

i wasnt looking down on the other cars, indeed i never even mentioned the MX5 but as it has been mentioned i owned one a few years back and loved it. However after owning a Lotus i wouldnt class either the MR2 or MX5 in the "sports car" bracket but then a Ferrari owner may well say the same about a Lotus.

My point was, and it seems to have been missed, is that there seems to be very few Lotus cars on the road or at least i see very few personally when driving around. There does however (or at least there was yesterday) seem to be an abundance of the two cars that i did mention.

My other point was that people in the MR2s and Z4s that i seen yesterday all appeared to be very smug and looking down their noses at my old Focus Estate wheras if id pulled alongside in my Lotus they probably wouldnt have appeared so smug.

Incidentally i have owned a Z4 as well and wouldnt class that in the "sports car" bracket either when compared with the Lotus but it is still a damn good car to the extent that i kept it for 2 years when people who know me on here will testify that it is a minor miracle that i owned a car longer than the ink on the log book could dry.

My original post was a light hearted post but as is often the case if you forget to put smilies in people can get the hump,my apologies to any Z4 or MR2 drivers who read this forum and have taken offence.

You know what's really impressive? The MK3 MR2 (if the figures are to be believed) weighs 960 kg. There's two reasons why I'm impressed by that, firstly its lighter than the original, which really swims against the tide of how most other cars are going, but also the official weight of the Elise S, which uses the same engine but an Aluminium chassis and GRP body is only 100 kg less. Sorry, that's got nothing at all to do with this topic, I just felt like saying it.

I quite like seeing anyone in any 2 seater roadster, they might not know anything about cars but they must have some sort of enthusiasm for them to not buy a default shopping trolley which is quite nice in this day and age. Oh, and I see three Loti nearly every single morning (two of them are PHer's) on my 11 mile commute and another one most evenings.

I drove from Shrewsbury to Sheffield and back again at the weekend. On Saturday my mate (in his s2000) and I went for a run around the Peaks which took in the Hope Valley and Edale along with Strines and Ladybower. On the Sunday I had the dubious pleasure of driving into and out of Sheffield. I didn't spot a single other Lotus all weekend and, tbh, this is the sad fact of most of my journeys in the Liz. There just don't seem to be many about this neck of the woods....

Considering they build in about 10 years, around a quarter of what porsche does in one, i'd say there not exactly parked off every street corner

Yes, they're rarer than a Porsche, but not by as much as you imply. Bear in mind that a small percentage of Porsche's production is destined for the UK. I'll hazard a guess (I can't be arsed to google the figures) and say that at least 50% of Lotus's production stays in the UK. That said, I'll concede that I see vastly more Boxsters and 911's on the road than Elises.

I see more Fezzas than I do Lotus to be honest, certainly see more 911 and more Cayman and Boxsters than I do Lotus (and that's not adding all 3 together).

Fair point lotus sell much less outside the uk than porsche do, however porsche sales figures in the uk alone are higher than lotus, total output and a lot higher than lotus uk output
