6 Series (E63) - Cheap!

Hi guys,
I'm planning the families future car to be purchased when our 2nd kid is in a front facing seat, this is probably 7-8 months away. Until then the E46 will do. Anyway...

I've noticed that the E63 in 630 guise has dropped well below £20 on autotrader. I've always been a bit of a fan of these and was wondering what peoples opinions are? I'm not too interested in performance so the 645 and 650 are out of the equation. According to parkers they can easily get high 30's MPG figures. I presume servicing costs are similar to that of a 530? Any service costs bounding around? Does anyone on here own one? Have experience of one? Reliability? Parts costs like pads/discs?

Also, I assume the depreciation will continue, if they are 18k now, what will they be in 7/8 months?

Infact, any info on the 6 series range would be very handy.

How about an XKR if a big auto coupe is what you're after?

Or even better an original 635/M6 - they'll be unlikely to depreciate now, look incredibly classy, an absolute classic.

To answer the OP, I've never driven a 6 but having read a couple of reviews (on MSN cars I think) they were of the opinion that the 630i was the best steer, due to lack of weight up front.

Of course, you should really get a 650i....

Have you tried fitting in an XK? I simply dont fit and as a E46 owner I want to keep it in the family.

The 630 has a massive boot, much nicer interior, BMW engineering and I like the look of it, especailly with the 19" rims that come on the 650.

So back to the question: Anyone Actually have any experience of them? Servicing etc..etc

I think the 6series is a good buy right now. It has a major amount of road presence and is a reliable half decent performance motor, even in the 630i guise. The engine i believe int he early ones produces 240odd bhp but does weigh a fair but. So dont expect lightening performance.

Buy a good colour with complimenting leather interior and with obligatory Nav and i cant see you losing to much over the next few years with one.

Pads 125 quid a set

Tyres 19" 250 a corner

Parts are pretty much main dealer only.

I thought the 630 only came with the N52 engine, i.e. 261bhp?
In which case you're looking at comfortable high 20's average.
On one of the 130i threads a 630i owner commented that he averages something like 28/29, and he doesn't hang about. Plenty of A and B road work as well as motorway.

To be fair though, the difference between 25mpg and 30mpg over 12k miles a year is only a few hundred quid right?

630 is a cracking car. And you do only live once, unless you're a buddhist...

I can't find a 630 for less than £25k. Where are you looking?

Done 63k in my 04 645, pretty much matching whats been said. I also get 27-28 mpg on motorway runs. Last service was £250.

Issues have been Crankcase rebreather, lamba sensor, and just this week the parking sensors have packed up, going in on Tuesday to a dealer, as I plumped for extending the warranty.

Like driving it, specially the noise when burying your right foot, not sure I'd get the same feeling from the 6pot. My 2 kids fit easily in the back and we toured Norway in it for 2 weeks with pretty much the kitchen sink in the boot, with no issues. The back seats are definetley not for adults though.

I have seen loads in the last few weeks at under £20000

Almost all 630s but also one 645 with 50k on the clock

Last week a light blue 630 sold for 18000 with 27k on the clock.


Its one of the best car deals you will get atm.

Cheapest 630 i can see is £26k, cheapest 645 i can see is £18k.

I had adults in the back of my 645i - its not too bad. Young kids are actually worse as their legs stick out and don't reach the space under the front seats. The boot is huge.
