On paper, Z4M stacks up really well against the competition, nothing overly negative in the reviews, I read that owners love them. So why are they depreciating so damn quickly?

The Z4M roadster was on the short list for my next car as I had a Z3M and loved it. I know that you shouldn't choose a car on its potential for loss but I'd have to completely avoid the classifieds or conversation with anyone who’d bought one for a while!

I have a mate who's a dealer (albeit in the north) who buys in used stock from a BMW dealer and he’s had a few offered at prices entirely disproportionate to the rest of the M range. The market is saturated with M3's which are barely any different from the next yet they still sell well.

What am I missing here?

It's a weird thing. I guess more people want an M3 and not a 2 seater. It's bad news if you bought one from new at around list price. For me I got a bargain of a Z4M Coupe a year old £10k off. I used to have an M3 CSL and they also suffered massive depreciation from new. I bought one when they were low £30ks, now they have increased in value!

If you want a Z4M it's a great time to buy :-)

Nothing.

They were overpriced new. Now the used cars have settled to a price level where they seem to be selling well, they should remain pretty firm.

Ive had mine for 6 months now, £31k, 2007/56, less than 2k miles, big spec. There are not too many similar cars for less money. Yes there are couple of cheaper(higher mileage/less spec/older cars) out there. But same spec/age/mileage as mine seem to be priced exactly the same as they were 6 months ago.

I've got to agree, mines an 0707 came 3 months old with next to no miles on it for £33k, big spec too. Now with CSL's on I wouldn't part with it, and can't think what I could replace it with. Many years ago I bought an 18month old Z3MC for £25k with less than 20,000 miles. I think these cars will reach a level and stay there. I think mine was great VFM.

Don't forget the effect that saturating this niche market with a whole heap of ex-BMW management cars had on the price. I don't know exactly how many were released that way, but I'd bet it had a significant effect on keeping prices low

Thanks.. It's good to get some educated feedback. In talking to the dealer friend, he had mentioned that they were all the same colour which seems to be the norm for BMW management cars.

Also, remember that the depreciation for the earliest 06 cars is about right...£44,000 new, worth £25,000 now...depreciation over 2 years at 40%...about normal isn't it??

I seem to remember about 2 months ago, saying that these cars would firm up and possibly rise in value and everybody laughed at me on here. I even had flying pigs. I am now taking a bow and exiting, stage left.

rolleyesThanks for that. I already said here that I paid £31k for it. Its on my website at that price because I dont actually want to sell it. In the mean time it helps the website look good.

When I do change the price, remind me not to sell it to you.

Are you blind?

The Z4 is striking in it's appearance.

Oh I forgot, the 996 is the epitomy of gorgeousness, not.

There is no such thing as an overpriced car, especially in the eyes of the owner. I'm sure the perceived value of your car would be different depending on if you were selling or buying it.

You've made 7 posts and you are insulting people already..... You'll go a long way on here.

I am not insulting anyone...

the worth of a car is what the market is prepared to pay for a car in a fair arms length transaction. If other cars which are spec'ed to a similar level are being advertised for £30k, and one odd car is priced at £36k it would be fair to say that the car is overpriced in relation to the market.

furthermore the number of post made by myself does not indicate anything other then number of posts made...!!! anyway your last point would suggest that i should wait till i have more posts or atleast the same number of posts as you before i start to insult people. well i am not on here to insult people. this is me simply standing up for myself.

and in reponse to your question, am i blind. what do you think?

A mate of mine recently purchased a Z4M coupe after toying with the idea for some time. Toying, as the price had been seriously off-putting (they aren't that plentiful in NZ). In the end he took a plunge and went to the dealership, politely pointed out that the car on offer had been sitting in their yard for somewhere in the region of 18 months, and managed to whittle them down to 20% off list price.

Really?

It may or may not be deliblerate. But you come accross like a troll(google it, if you have never heard of it) Normally a sign of low self esteem.
Once you have made a few more posts, people on get to know you a little, and your opinions might become respected.

I buy and sell cars for a living. I know exactly what price a car will or wont sell for. The way I choose to price my cars is precisely for my own reasons, which I dont have to justify to you, whatever your thoughts about them are.

I know a guy how had one of the first Ferrari 599's for sale. It was a good spec, and colour, and he wanted £250,000 for it. As well as his own ad, he placed another spoof ad for a lesser spec, not as good colour car for £275,000. This more expenise car did not exist, but in such a small market with less than 5-6 cars being offered at the time. His car looked better value.

Maybe the odd expensive looking Z4M Coupe in the market might help hold the prices up, slightly more than otherwise. Can you imagine what would happen to the prices, if everyone who had one for sale tried to compete to make their own one the cheapest.

Its always funny on here. When someone who is thinking of buying something, they often seem to talk the prices of that particular car down, and people who own the same car, want to talk it up.
You need to ask yourself if the person posting has a motive for their post.

I notice from your other small number of posts, you might be in the market for one of these cars.

Well I paid full up for my "ugly" Z4M roadster

...however I bottled actually buying it and contract hired it instead!

having said that im paying the depreciation in the monthly fee, but its a great car so i really dont care!

I have spent more, and lost less on far less enjoyable cars.

As for the new poster - I dont think hes been particularly rude - just making his point.

It's just not true. Sorry.

There are five Z4MCs on the AUC site for under £30k.

Just a couple of months ago folk here were saying prices had settled and the £30k mark wouldn't be broken until 2009!

Hi

I responded with the flying pig comment a couple of months ago and see no reason why you're trying to infer that some how you were right. Prices are still dropping; look at the classifieds ads, there's a few cars at 26k and a couple more at less than 30k. At the time you inferred prices would go up. This certainly is not the case.

The trend is still down, which is really unfortunate for current owners. I plan to purchase a Coupe shortly, but see no reason why I should have bought over the last 5 months, the last 2 months have seen at least a 2 K drop . I really liked the Z4M coupe on my test drive and would have bought one instead of the Cayman S, if it had been on sale at the time. I can’t understand the price drops either.???

aabbaa1980, you DO come across as rude.
