Steering Column - prior to crawling upside- down in footwell
Discussion
Hi Chaps
Been away from here working far too much for my liking
Took the mighty Griff out for a spin today and feel it's about time to investigate the vertical slack in my steering column. Definately at the top end of the column not at bulkhead
Not seen anything about this over the years on here. Is internal wear normally a cause. I would have thought a Vauxhall column should be designed to last for quite some time (although with no p/s there is undeniably more load than an Astra).
Does the adjustable knuckle come apart easily, and if so are there service parts within ?
Anyone "been there done that" yet ?
Thought I'd ask before dislocating my 7th Lumbar vertibrae whilst performing the inverted headstand with double pike that will be necessary to investigate fully myself.
(No point having all these useful anoraks on PH if you can't use abuse them every now and then :wink
Cheers Chappies

Which centre pivoting joint are you talking about Moose?
I thought the steering column comes through the bulkhead and is then into a Universal Joint, then there is a short intermediate shaft which is splined on each end, then another UJ connecting the intermediate shaft to the steering rack.
I didn't think there was anything in the cockpit itself.
Am I missing something? It may explain why I can't find a bloody clunk I get every now and again.

Hmm, something's come loose Moose!Took the mighty Griff out for a spin today and feel it's about time to investigate the vertical slack in my steering column. Definately at the top end of the column not at bulkhead
And could it not simply be the two clamp bolts just forward of the plazzy binnacle; that'd quite easily explain your uppy downyness.
Just to finish the thread off for those hunting for answers in 2 years time:
