Hi There.
I've not done many TVR's but most a/c systems should be good for about 5 deg C from the vents ( even Landy's) on a slow fan speed with the engine at a fast idle and the outside temp below about 32 degrees C.

If it's not getting that cold then you should get it checked out!!!

Mine's great when it works. After several attempts, still haven't found the leak, even after charging it with dye in the system.

It's even good in the lower cabin in the height of summer with the roof off.

When it works, it's great - and in fact in 3.5 years mine's only been on the blink once. It does add a bit of complexity though: I've still got trouble with my cooling fans coming on and off intermittently (as they should when the air con is on) while the air con's not running. Have discovered it's some sort of bad connection in the top of the drier/receiver (where the refrigerant goes from the condenser), and suspect I'm gonna need a new one.

Ade, how much am I likely to be looking at?

Anyway, back to topic - I find it invaluable for doing long motorway journeys in the summer when four hours of 80mph slipstream can get a bit tiring, but going roof on without a/c turns the car into an oven. Since I do quite a bit of motorway stuff, I wouldn't want to be without it!

Not sure how similar the Chimp heater box is to my Griff, but I assume the rest is similar.
PITA to get working right, but well worth the effort, I can make ice on the windscreen or freeze my legs.
Don’t waste time and money trying to get the A/C sorted at the local place. Find out where they send the jobs that stump them and start there.

TVR didn’t crimp joints properly. A top place will have a number of crimping tools. They had to use a 12 point crimp over the top of the original crimp that had to few to ever be reliably gas tight.

The heater box isn’t suitable for A/C. It was a non-A/C design modified. It was cardboard and the condensation soaks it. At that point all the cooling effort goes into freezing the waterlogged cardboard. Performance doesn’t return until it’s dried out. This involves it dripping into the footwell.
There is no way to make it work. A good A/C company will design a new box that removes the problems of the heater always adding some heat.

Buying a car with A/C fitted provides a good starting point compared to trying to start with a non A/C car. Just be prepared to do the development work that TVR didn’t.

Hello WooHoo.

Just had a quick look at my parts listing and a Drier for your motor would be around £45.00 and a pressure switch ( trinary switch) at around £20.

You could replace just the switch but the drier is a service item so while your in there you may as well replace the lot!

Cheers Ade

Mine works fine summer and winter. Keeps cabin really cool and demists in seconds on damp rainy nights.

Never knowingly suffered from the cardboard box syndrome mentioned above but I do aim to operate it about once a week summer or winter to keep the seals 'pumped up' and the compressor running regularly. Only had it re-gassed when buying the car a year ago - but I relly do think running it regularly is important. Nick.

Hi Ade

Thanks for that - Could be a lot worse!

The car's due a general service anyway so I'll hopefully get it sorted then. You were spot on about the cooling fans problem, BTW. Nice one.

Cheers
