Hi All

Not sure if this has be posted yet (I did a search and didn't find it)

There is a petition on the downing street website to protest against plans to ban cars over 15 years old.

Those of you with such cars may wish to sign it on the following link http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Classic-Cars/  There are currenlly only 21000 signatures which probably won't be enough to make a difference. So if you want to prevent this silly rule sign up and encourage others to do so.

FBHVC Newsletter 1/2008 said:
The June 2007 newsletter questioned whether any notice would ever be taken of the on-line petitions being submitted to Downing Street. We highlighted one particular petition with absolutely the right sentiments (calling on the Prime Minister to reject proposals to ban or restrict the use of old cars) but with a totally erroneous explanation. This petition (which closes in March) has recently been given a new lease of life with round-robin e-mails encouraging all and sundry to do the electronic equivalent of signing.

While we make no further comment on whether one should or should not sign, we know that the threats mentioned in the petition’s accompanying explanation are, as Henry Ford might have said, bunk.

As I thought - however there are moves to set up 'congestion' and city centre exlusion zones for cars over 15 years old.

Scaremongering - again!
Several e-mails and a telephone call received today suggest that the e-petition calling on the Prime Minister to reject proposals to ban or restrict the use of older cars that we debunked in June in our Newsletter 3/2007 has been given a new lease of life. We do, of course, fully support the principle, but the problem comes with the explanatory note, which says:-

Several EU proposals across the years are dangerous to the classic car movement. One that has been under consideration is to ban the use of cars older than 10 years. Similarly, Edinburgh City Council is considering the banning of cars over 15 years old from the town centre. These, and similar, proposals directly threaten the classic car movement, and encourage the manufacture of new cars, with the attendant environmental issues of sourcing raw materials, manufacturing, distributing and scrapping the spiralling supply of new vehicles.

This is ill-informed and unnecessary scaremongering that helps no-one: it resonates with those who are determined to see the worst in what is going on round us, and spreads the myth that government and EU have ‘got it in for us’. Experience suggests the opposite, but we would be pleased if the sponsor of that e-petition (or anyone else for that matter) could provide us with any evidence to support the claims.

Why will no one read this? but instead continue to comment as if it were real, or say they've signed.

Yeah I know but a lovely car. I love Bentley. Not a fan of the GT though VW Phaetons are ok but to tart them up with a Bentley body kit is nasty. Still if you gave me one I wouldnt say no.
