My tacho rises to 1000/1500rpm, when the engine is switched off!
as soon as i turn on the ignition it resets back to zero.

What's causing this?confused

Weird !

Has it always done this since you bought the car..

Sounds like a wiring fault.

From memory - the tacho is a simple beastie..

It just takes the 'source' from the low tension side of the coil - my guess is around the ignition barrel area - and then will also have a negative to earth.. it just counts the on / off's of the coil to measure rpm.

One of the wires must be loose..

Have a check in the wedge bible for the wire colour - should help to identify it.

I have a green one and it's OK. However the wife's jeep (also green) has a similar feature with the petrol gauge...

all 400's do it, due to the dial being upside down, it because the needle has no feed to it with ignition off.
