I've got a '94 Chim 4 litre. There are three LEDs on the dashboard between the speedo and the tacho. A green one at the top for the indicators, a yellow one in the middle that illuminates when the ingnition is switched on and the engine is not running (goes off when the engine is running), and a red one at the bottom that I have never seen illuminated. Any ideas what it is for?

94 chim, doesn't normally have a green led - sounds like a mod - they are normally in the radio panel.

It should be a red ign/alt led, yellow oil warning, and a red alarm indicator IIRC.

Funny that i have exactly the same set of lights on a Late 94 as well, the red one at the bottom does not seem to do anything either, except it glowed very faintly at the MOT test last october when idling, i thought it was the oil pressure light as that's what my owners handbook said it was yikes, but the oil pressure light turned out to be the the yellow one, i have assumed that the lower red one is the ignition light, so have ended up replacing the alternator, and as the battery is now completely US, i have not managed to start it yet to confirm whether it is not. Finding a battery that fits the box is starting to cause me a right headache. The top light according to the handbook is the alarm indicator, but does mothing on mine at all.

anybody know why the bottom "ignition" light does not come on when the ignition is on before starting?

Yep same as mine, but they aren't, i proved mine by disconnecting the oil pressure switch feed at the switch, and the middle yellow one is definitley oil pressure as it went out when disconnected.
