I wonder if anyone can help me with this query?

A friend has just had a new head and crankshaft fitted to his 15,000 mile Cooper S JCW. It only went in to the dealer because the traction and engine lights would come on (and both stay on) as soon as engine speed got to the first red line (i.e. before the cut out etc).

We have been told that the car needs to do 1200 miles below 4,000 rpm to run it in, so we cannot check whether the original fault has been fixed. We don't want to abuse the car, but as it's for sale and not being used (hence won't clock up the miles needed) we could do with being able to rev it fully once or twice - to both test that the original fault is fixed and maybe also to show the performance when showing a potential buyer the car.

Does anyone know if the ECU would store this info - i.e. if I high rev it (but no limiter cut-in)? If the lights still come on I want to be able to be confident taking it back to Mini and them not being able to say we revved it higher than recommended.

I know I could really do with someone driving a 1,000 miles in the next week or so, but that's a non-starter I'm afraid.

no idea. but it is a widely held belief that it should be run in gradually for a couple of thousand miles.
