How long have your clutches lasted?

I recently had a fair bit of work done at offord motor co. and amongst the work they advised a new clutch, which I had done, however I see now looking back over service history, that this is a replacement after 2 years but only 1300 miles!

1300 miles must be a record?! A friend who saw the unit they took out said it didnt look bad, and it could be refurbable, so fair enough I sent it to AP racing who have refurbed it to "as new" standards for £250.

I've chucked this refurbed one on the classifieds now as hopefully I wont need a clutch in the near future (although I know im jinxing myself here)

But (apart from my obvious plug for sale) the point of my post here is, how much mileage have you guys had out of your clutches? 1300 must be a joke, or else the previous owner was very uncaring for the clutch!

Hum - to be honest after hearing the stories of clutches I've kept money aside for a new one, but I'm on 32K miles with the original, and that includes fighting torque smile

Edit: It's been suggested it's my little legs that don't push the clutch pedal all the way down so don't stress the fingers?

one of mine only lasted 18 months (9400 miles)

The fingers were perfect, but something else had broken....can't remember what. The place that put the new one, said the old one hadn't been fitted properly.

Probably trying to make me feel better smile

Its not very often you hear of one 'wearing out'. It tends to be breakages....fingers etc.

Mines on 29k and still working fine. I had the slave and master cylinder replaced at 24k, they inspected the clutch and said the wear on it was negligible.
i think it's all down to how you treat the car - I can remember when Top Gear tested a Ferrari Enzo, and saying that if you overide all the electronic gizmos, the clutch would only last for 3 'Full bore' racing starts.

one of my customers has a new golf R32.He tells me, that he's only allowed one racing start in his car, otherwise his warranty is void.

Don't know if that's true or not ?

Not wanting to tempt fate, but we're at 33,000 on the original.....

A friend of mind can better 1300 miles though ! He went through 6 clutches in 2000 miles !!!!! eek
(we had our suspicions that the dealer wasn't fitting them correctly as they were fairly new at the time)

Changed mine last September after the original slave cylinder seals went at 32,000 miles. The clutch was fine and all fingers were perfect but changed it anyhow whilst it was all off the car.

I might add that my clutch was a little special as the original did not work and the Raceproved chaps (and Track Car) sorted it all out. I must say I'm well impressed with the new light weight slave cylinder, the clutch pedal is now sooooo light its an amazing difference to original.

Clutch wear is totally dependant on driving style. Even more so with a twin plate as they never realy "truly" disengage (drag of the 2 plates ont eh central friction disc.

Those that sit with their foot on the clutch at traffic lights, or tend to slip the clutch a lot on lauch or gear change will wear one out faster than those that don't.

Iirc Neilus managed 53k on one. It was only changed because there was other work going on at the time, rather than it failing.

Clutch when I got the car went after 50 miles (slave), then fingers after 3 months, replaced with Raceproved clutch, lasted about 2 months. Follow up Raceproved has been fine for a year.

So don't talk to me about clutches. biggrin

Replaced the original clutch at around 40K, fingers broke. Just outside Blackpool curiously enough. Perhaps the car got all emotional, dunno. wink

good point, the main fault reported with mine was the slave cylinder seals, its quite possible there was bugger all wrong with the actual clutch itself, mightnt have even needed the refurb!!

That's right, hadn't failed but was showing signs of wear (none of the fingers were broken). The clutch was out, and seeing as I do several touring trips through Europe a year I took the decision to change it rather than waiting till it failed.
