I'd be a little worried to. Wet clutches and synthetic oil tend not to mix too well. What does is say in the manual?

As a general rule that has to be cobblers. My blade had been running on fully synth since the first service swapped out the veg for at 500 miles. It's nigh or 7 years and 35k miles later. Bike fully synth oil won't have the friction reducers in it that car fully synth has in it so that it doesn't cause the clutch to slip. If you put car oil in with the friction reducers then it'll probably slip regardless of whether it's fully synth, semi synth or whatever.

Regards,

Mark

LOL, Gotta laugh at this, you really can't wait for your bike can you smilebiglaugh Do you find yourself driving past the dealer even though it is miles out of your way smile I know I did.

Some of the Aprilia guys moan about clutch slip when switching from semi to fully synthetic. I can't see what the difference would be between the two, but if the manufacturer says go with semi then do so as it's cheaper. smile

...and they're definitely using oil intended for bikes and not mobil 1 for cars?

Not sure Mark, but you can't rule it out can you. Another factor would be perhaps the clutch starts slipping because it's worn, but this happens quite after an oil change. Wear would be the real problem, but oil could be blamed. Like I say, I use semi synth because it's cheaper and the manufacturer says it's good enough. I don't run anything exotic, so frequent oil changes and decent oil is good enough for me.

Very odd indeed.

OP: Anyhoo, I can't give a definitive answer but I've been using synth for a while (dealer specified it when I used to pay someone to service it) and have had no problems. Basically do what the dealer says and if it goes tits up you can wave the service book under his nose wink

I service my own bikes too, means I have a backup if one is out of commission. I doubt I'll buy a new bike again, but I would like to expand the collection at some point - muscle bike, hyper sports bike, super moto, track bike ... loads of options! biggrin

D'oh I've just realised I said I've been using semi-synth for a while which clearly contradicts what I said earlier... I've changed my post as I've been using synth since the veg got changed out at 500 miles - tiring day wink

I started servicing the blade when my dealer gave me a quote to do a major service and I nearly died laughing. It did take me the whole day the first time round but takes a lot less now. It's all good fun anyway. I wouldn't buy another new bike I don't think. The blade was a massive bargain from motorcycle stty and it's so good I think it'll fall apart before I sell it.

You should start a collection and charge people admission. I have 3 bikes at the moment. The kx500 is in bits and I really should turn it in to a supermoto at some point. The ducati is in the shed since I bought it as a winter bargain. I've taken it out a couple of times and am rather ashamed to say that I'm not entirely sure it's for me. Still, if you don't try these things you never know smile

As a poor student I would put whatever oil was cheapest on the garage shelves in my bikes; be it bike car or lawnmower, mineral, vegetable or peanut, and I never once had a problem with clutch slip.
Likewise a CX500 that only ever had Castrol GTX (working by then; I could afford to splash out...)

My TL 1000 on the other hand, serviced from new by a Suzuki main dealer with the recomended oil every time, had the clutch done three times as a warranty claim.

But that might have been a bit more to do with drag starts and wheelies...

only time ive had clutch slip on a bike is when using car oil. different additive packs in car oil so im told. still run it on car oil though, bike 20/50 is a rip off & after a few miles it stops slipping as it warms up.

I've had a Daytona 600, 675 and now a pimped up thruxton, and all have been on Mobil 1 bike oil. Never clutch slipped, or even burned much oil.

Had a Kawasaki ZZR600 a few years back, and put Castrol R4 in it. It blew the bottom end right out, did the mains and big ends. Kawasaki relieved me of about £300 for new journals, gaskets and bits.
