Tappeting on tick over

when i leave the car ticking over it startes tappeting, sounds kinda bad to me, not had a bmw before so nt sure what it could be, just wondering my oil thing is 2 notches from the red, should i change this and hope it fixes it?

yes it might sort it. It may have the wrong weight oil in there.
What car it it? Who did the last change? How many miles does it have?
If this doesnt cure it you may have a worn hydraulic tappet lifter/s.

Wrong weight of oil? you mean the wrong viscousity!

You need to check what oil your car needs and empty whats in it and fill up the required amount. If there is still tapping then the lifters are worn and may need replacing. It could also be a worn oil pump which at idle has hardly any pressure.

What is the car and what mileage?

it is a bmw 320i, it has done 115,000 miles, not sure who changed the oil last as i have only just bought it, what weight oil shall i use? i think i will do it this weekend

What the hell do you mean by weight, oil as far as im aware is rated in its viscousity, of which for your car i do not know. Search BMW's website.

Presumably an E36 model? Ie Pre 1998? or S reg?

Phone your local dealer and ask them mate, they will tell you the amount and the ''viscousity'' required.

ok i will give them a ring in the morning, i have heard oil refered to as weight before, but that was oil for the machines at work, so who knows, iv never had a bmw before, but i assume the oil filter is in the cast housing at the front of the engine, its a e36 1992 320i 2L

You probably have something similar to this which houses it, oil filters are cheap as chips, even from a dealer.
