I was stopped by a cop with a gun for speeding on a three lane caridgeway. I was doing 84 in a 40 zone.

The cop told me i would not loose my licence ( I asked several times) as I had no points and he was not doing me for dangerous driving as I was in lane 3 and there was little on the roads.

However I have looked on the net and it says over 30mph over and you are likley to be baned.

I am very worried!! I know I was speeding but a ban the first time seems a bit harsh.

any advice?

Were you reported on summons, or given a fixed penalty notice?

I thought doubling the limit was a ban ! but for how long i would not know.

we all do it, just a matter of time before we get caught !

however, have you noticed how slow people drive these days, have they got nowhere to get to !

More than 30 over would usually mean a short ban and a hefty fine. The Police and the Courts are two different things, and plod's opinion is just that. 1 month off and £250-300 would be my guess.

I'd say that at that speed you would almost certainly looking at a ban.

You say it is a bit harsh because it is your first offence? Firstly I doubt it is, just that it was your first time getting caught....

Secondly, it is obviously a 40 limit for a reason.

Before you think I am another one of 'those' people, I have been known to drive at 71+ on a motorway!

It is all too easy to drive at silly speeds but if we do it then we must be prepared to suffer the consequences.

Sadly you took a risk and got caught :-(

And took a risk in a very dodgy place.

I wouldnt always agree with sped limits, and the propoganda campaign against speed by the government etc, infuriates me.

But lets face it....84 in a 40 is a tad silly.

I think a ban for 1 month is on the books, a frind of mine did 80mph in a 50 zone and got a month bad and about a £400 last year.
And onther friend in his Evo 9 got a 2 month ban and about a £600 fine for doing 109mph on a motor way after flashing the car in front to pull over then floored it and then it turned out to be a unmarked police car lol lol I found that funny.
But the funny thing was they didnt give him any points.
Sorry but it doesnt look good. Lets hope the suns shinning out of your arse the day it goto court.
Good luck

You'll get no choice at that speed, it's an automatic summons to see what the court has to say. Don't drive there either as the likelyhood is you will be walking home.

If you can try to get a letter from your boss saying you'll lose your job and hope they like you. Wear a suit, look very sorry and keep your fingers crossed.

If you do get banned you won't get points, just a fine.

I hope you weren't speeding through roadworks, they put the 40mph signs up to protect the workmen and the courts hate it if you endanger others through your actions.

Just on a point of order, attendance is still optional. If you plead guilty by post you don't have to go to court.

Tell me about it, Bradford!!! came of M62 and was just not thinking, still ploding alond at motorway speed.

No roadworks. The cop said that said that it was not dangerous as I was in lane 3 and it was empty.

If you are feeling lucky go to court and ask for the calbration tests for the equipment and evidence that all the protocol has been followed. You would be surprised how many times it has not been followed and no one ever checks. If you can find anything they did wrong it will be thrown out of court. I did it once and got off. It was a laugh but a bit nerve racking at the time!

For those of us with fast bikes 84 in a 40 is taking it easy!!!

Check out these guys, www.whitedalton.co.uk/

They look after us two wheeled nuts mainly, but have some really useful info on their site as regards penalties and stuff.

Actually, I just used their punishment calculator from their other site:- Here's your results www.motordefenceteam.co.uk/punishment-calculators/calc2.htm eek
