Wow,

Picked it up yesterday and can now understand what all the fuss is about with these cars. The power is amazing, and thats stepping up from a quick 328 sport.

It is certainley worth the money i must say.

Anyway, it has the smg gear box (yes i know its not everyones choice but it is mine) and i just want to know if this noise im getting is normal! When i sometimes open up the drivers door before starting up, i get the noise of like a pump going on for some time. Also when changing from say reverse to sport the noise comes again. I know the gear box sort of works with the pump, but what im trying to work out is why it does it when i open the door before starting??

Also is it right that when in sport mode and giving it beans i can keep my foot planted down and change up without having to worry about lifting off? I got it off a dealer who isn't to firmiliar with this gear box so he couldn't answer all my questions.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

The Noise is the hydralic punp priming, its normal.

And yes, flat shift is a feature of the box.

How long does the system take to pressurise?

You can tell if the SMG is starting to fail as it will take longer and longer to do. I have heard of some people having to sit stationary for up to a minute before they can select first gear. Not saying this will happen to yours of course.

You might find this useful in getting to know the SMG system:

That noise is normal. As a rule of thumb you should be able to get in to the car from stone cold, turn the ignition on to see the gear displayed immediately put it in to neutral and start.
If you have to wait say as long as it takes to turn on, put your seat belt on and then put it in to neutral then you have a pressure problem.

I just sold my SMG EVO and had a good run out of it. I purchased it with 45,000kms, sold it at 80,000 and only had to replace the pressure accumulator the week I sold it. Once you get use to the system and learn how to drive it and around its foilables it is great.

Good luck.

You'll have a lot of fun with the SMG - i definatly did. Still have the car but alas is no longer in SMG form. I ran into problem after problem but i still stand by the system and say that i love it. If you ever have any questions to ask give me a yell as i've pretty mych experianced everything that one could with SMG in e36 guise.

Hi M3John, well chuffed Iv managed to find someone with some knowledge of E36 M3 SMG so just wondered if I could pick your brains? I had a small leak of CHF on mine so took to the dealer to have new resevoir (£200+) got it home and the next morning noticed it had worse leak than before where resevoir wasnt seated properley, took back to main dealer and they fixed it for free and gave back few days later, since then, at full chat the car sometimes wouldnt go into 4th for a few seconds, just flashed "4" then finally selected, told dealer but said I would live with it as no courtesy cars available for ages. Car finally gave up going along dual carriageway and selected 0 from 5 or 6 and I freewheeled to the hard shoulder, got flat bed to dealer were they then told me following day that car was driving as the clutch open relay had blown and was now replaced, however, they then proceeded to tell me that they think these ongoing probs mean it needs a whole new pump (£3309!) which I disagree with as I have no pump warnings now the leak is fixed and it primes in around 15 seconds and changes gear rapidly and smoothly with no slip. My new problem is thus, driving home at a steady pace and amber cog light comes on but car to me appears to be driving as normal its only when I go from 4th upwards that it jumps straight to 6th without even flashing 5th, I presume this is an electrical fault and the car is now booked in for next monday to have some terminals changed on the gearbox to gold plated revised BMW ones! (£336) Getting sick of no one knowing what there talking about, hope you can help, cheers and fingers crossed! Phil smile
