How do I go about doing this in NI?

The V5 was posted to DVLA in Swansea when I purchased the car, but returned to me saying they couldn't do anything with it!

I would also like to change the plate to a NI one at the same time.

Thanks in advance.

You should fone up the DVLNI, they are in coleraine.

I was on with them this morning getting a duplicate V5 for the car I`m currently selling (£25 for a duplicate - rip off!)

I accidently foned the English one and they told me my car didn`t exist - lol..

Swansea should've sent you a Certificate of Permanent Export, with which you trundle down to DVLA along with the other gubbins they need you to come with, and it gets registered, with a new V5 sent out in a couple of weeks time - civil service, hardly the epitome of efficiency - and you'll be offered if you'd like to change the reg to NI style.

If you have the full V5, just take it to the tax office ( Ballymena/County Hall is easier....free parking )
Fill in an import form ( odd, but its true ) and show some ID etc, Usual change of owner crap, and its done.

It only takes a few minutes, aside from any annoying queues. And choosing a NI reg costs nothing ( Aside from paying any tax due )

If you're changing reg to an NI plate go to whichever tax office you feel has the most interesting plate. I'm out of touch with what's on offer but a BIG might be better than PIG!

They arent releasing PIG, or NIG, or a few others I think.

I think you can choose regions, no matter which tax office you go to though.

AFAIR you can only get Belfast numbers at Belfast tax office, Downpatrick at Downpatrick etc, but you can get any region from Coleraine. You also need to fill in a V55/5 with the orange stripe down the side (the red stripe one is for new cars only), and bring it, with the UK V5 Cert, to whichever tax office you want. At the minute Belfast numbers are SEZ, Ballymena are VKZ, Armagh are VLZ, Downpatrick are NJZ and Eniskillen are FIG almost GIG (good for anyone who likes Family Guy giggity giggity!!) Don't remember the rest off the top of my head. You DON'T need a Certificate of Permanent Export, just the V5. I know this because I must do about 300 of these a year!

Seems everyone isn't singing from the same hymn sheet then, if you say you DON'T need a CoPE.

Point is....I'd have known what it is, if I'd needed one, which I didnt.

If you bring a uk car over, do you have to change plates

Or can you just keep them on

Bring it to where ?

If you remain in the United Kingdom, ie Northern Ireland, then you can retain the English style plate.

If you want to leave the UK, and take it to Southern Ireland, then you will need to re-register it and get a suitable new plate.

ITS NOT AS COMPLICATED AS YOU THINK TO REGISTER A CAR FROM ENGLAND. JUST GO TO YOUR LOCAL TAX OFFICE YOULL NEED THE USUAL MOT (if over four years old for a english car)INSURANCE CERT. THE MONEY !!! & THE GREEN NEW KEEPER SUPLIMENT OF TAX BOOK IF YOUVE LOST THIS YOULL NEED YOUR PROOF OF PURCHASE & THELL CHARGE YOU £25. FOR A NEW TAX BOOK. NB. THIS TAKES AGES TO COME THROUGH !!! YOUR ENTITLED TO A N.I REGISTRATION FREE WHEN YOU FIRST TAX THE CAR...(JUST ASK IF THEYVE ANY GOOD NUMBERS)
