Due to the sad demise of my very pretty 944S2 I am now looking for a new Porsche. Can't decide between 964 or even 965 in mint condition or 993 with a few miles on it or a cheap Boxter S. Obviously the newer the car the more I am inclined to pay. All advice gratefully recieved.

Its all down to personal preference but for 25K I would go for a Boxster. You should be able to pick up a good spec low milage 2.7 on a 1999 - 2000 plate.

Really does depend on what you want. The BoxS is a very fine car and is *modern*. It will do the two seater sports thing very, very well and is practical.

The 964 is an utterly wonderful "proper" tiny little 911. I love Dom's 964RS - but I couldn't own one. Dom will tell you all about his.

The 993 - last of the air-cooled - tempting - but again for me a little dated now....but still oh so wonderful.

Its a nice choice to have is all I'd say.

Oh and buy a BoxS.

Cheers for the lead in, Don

Yes, it is horses for courses. Without a shadow of a doubt, I would go for a 964RS for this money. It is quite simply the most excting car I have owned (for right and wrong reasons) and has a tremendous amount of character.

However, you may not want to do the odd trackday, like I do. Or you may have a spine that is not made from titanium. Or you might just prefer your carto be RHD.

In this case, a 993 Carrera 2 or a Boxster would be a better choice.

I am not sure about the 965. I was going to get one before the RS. It is softer than the RS and less able on track, and they are expensive to maintain relatively speaking. Much better looking, and good acceleration, but not for me. I would say you have to be a real Turbo fan to go for it, as there are better cars for track work, better cars for commuting and better cars for maintaining.

Boxter S if you can get one for the cash, best all rounder if not as focused drivers tool as the others.
Otherwise Clubsport has it with his idea, as I think 993 or 964RS's will have mega-miles at that price point !!

I dont think you will find a Boxster S for 25K, the cheapest I've seen one is 28K and you wont find them at this price very often.

Dom, I like to think I played a big part in talking you out of that 965 . What a question to ask eh?...can you get rhd 993s for as low as £25k now?...if so I'd have to say that one of those in rhd is a very nice intro into 911 motoring - going straight for an RS is a bit like Audley Harrison stepping into the ring with Roy Jones Junior, or taking your first drive in your Superlight R in the wet

I think you'd be lucky to get a RHD 993 worth driving for that price. Plenty LHDs around though.

I have seen them for sub 25k, but whether they are worth having is something else. After having bought the cheapest Lotus Carlton on the planet and spending the same again doing it up, I can't recommend skimping on purchase price
