School-boy error last night smash. Decided to run the Chim on a evening blast but she started spluttering away on turnover, ticked away unheathily for a minute and died.
First thing that sprung to mind was lack of fuel, the needle was hovering around empty after a 250 mile trip so I nipped to the local Total (2 mins away from the flat which is quite handy) to fill up my reserve can. Bingo.

Total luck (no pun intended biggrin ) to have ran dry outside my flat from a 250 mile round trip but potentially damaging to the engine. (note to self, fill up on 1/4 tank regardless)

Which brings me to my point I guess, having run the tank dry would I have caused any damage to the engine/pipes/mechanicals by fuelling with the nasty residues left at the bottom of the tank??

The car seemed fine after fully refulling but I can't help thinking I may have caused some internal injuries. redcard

Your fuel filter may need replacing sooner than expected. But you won't have done any lasting damage.

Generally speaking most of us have done at one time or another in some car..
I'll second the fuel filter thing... but you should be ok..

I can`t see this having any real problems, just might take a while to fire when you get petrol in her. I would put in 97 octane as a way of appeasing the petrol Gods biggrin

I did indeed, £60 into the tank using Total's finest.
I have to admit I was very surprised to reach 250 miles (and not a yard more!) from my last filler. 80% motorway miles and 20% light/heavy urban usage - not bad for a 4.0HC i think.

All cars have the fuel outlet at the bottom of the tank anyway so the business about pulling st down the pipes if you let it run too low is an old wives tail. Dont worry, whatever else is wrong with it it is probably not the fuel system.

But fuel injection pumps do not enjoy being run totally dry so if it was running for long it may have it's life expectancy cut.
