Could not engage 1st and 3rd gear!! Help
Discussion
Last night about an hour into driving home, my car decided not to let me put the car into 3rd gear, then when i slowed for a junction, i discovered that i could not get it into 1st either - 2nd, 4th and 5th were ok.
I just could not push the gear stick forward into these 2 gears. I stopped and consulted the 'bible' for a bit, then thought i'd try reverse as not tried that. That worked ok, then tried the other gears and I could get it into all gears again! - Odd
Was only a couple of miles from home, so drove back carefully and it was fine in all gears on the way back.
Anyone had anything similar happen to them?, and any suggestions of what problem could be? - Odd as it was only 1st and 3rd affected and the gears came back.
Just to clarify - It is NOT that i put it into gear, released the clutch and had no drive - I could not physically push the gear stick into 1st/3rd with the clutch depressed.
On way to check fluid level now...

Sounds like the linkage... I'm not too familiar with the TVR system but I know it is a rather elaborate system so perhaps something has come loose? Alternatively could it be the synchros in the box going? Have a look in the bible at the linkage and perhaps it will have something to try to confirm or deny this idea?

Remote? - Sorry, please could you explain further, not sure what you mean?
The point where the gear lever connects to the gearbox is a unit that bolts on to the back of the gearbox. This is known as the 'remote' because it is a separate unit. It's bolted on via bushes that provide some vibration isolation. If the bushes fail or the bolts come loose then the remote will be able to more relative to the gearbox and you will find it is difficult selecting gears. If it gets bad enough you may even find it starts clouting the prop shaft.Gassing Station | Chimaera | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
