530d turbo - dealer costs

Hi. I've got a 77K mile E39 530d - thankfully the turbo is ok, although I'm aware that they are a week point on these cars. I do all I can to prolong it's life, allowing it to warm up when cold, & to cool down when hot, & intermediate oil changes. Also, I've changed the oil breather & cleaned out the EGR valve.

I'm aware that the cost is around £1K - £1.2K to have a new one supplied & fitted at an indie.

When I was in my local stealer the other day, buying an OE oil filter for the intermediate oil change I thought I'd ask him how much they would charge.

Could have knocked me down when he said £6 - 6.5K. Asked him how they justified this - with a straight face he said they have to replace not only the turbo, but also the entire exhaust system, inlet manifold & EGR valve. I suggestde to him that the EGR valve would only need cleaning (its only a piece of pipe with a sprung loaded valve, & that the exhaust could be drained (oil in cats) & then after a smoky 50 miles it would be fine.

He have me that old fashioned look that said 'how can we pay for our overheads if we don't rip the ass out of the punters'.

Still, there was a guy on the other desk complaining bitterly that they had charged him £17/litre + vat for Mobil 1 oil - perhaps I should have told him it retails at £23 for 4 litres incl. vat at Costco.

Not having a dig about anything, it's just estate agents do generaly have a bad reputation when it comes to honesty you have to admit.

Because the employee was talking ste to be honest. In business mate you dont want an employee sgging off your company do you, think about it.
