I was looking into the Mayan calender, stating that 21 December, 2012 will be the end of the world, or a "big change". Further checking shows that the Chinese "I Ching" mentions this date, as well as the "Prophecies of Merlin"....the 500AD Merlin, not the pointy-hatted King Arthur version. smile Science supports something happening on that date. They show that the Earth and the Sun will line up perfectly with the center of the Milkyway....this happens every 25,000 years. Five years ago, a black hole was discovered in the center of the Milky way....just for good measure. Scientist claim that such an alignment could cause a polar shift, which would right and truly wreak havoc on the world. Science also knows that approximately 800,000,000 million years ago, the North Pole was in the center of the Pacific, so shifting has occurred in the past. The Mayan, and Merlin (Welsh word is Myrrnan IIRC)write of rising seas, hotter sun, etc. A polar shift due to a hyper-gravity alignment would account for this. Has anyone put any thoughts into this? Has anyone got any equally scientific counterpoints to these theories? Personally, I think we will get through; interesting science nontheless.

Here is some logical rebuking as well as support:

Appreciate that Jim, I shall endeavor to get loads of credit cards the week before, and buy loads of crap... I will be disappointed should the end not come, and I will have accrued huge debt... part of that debt will be yours I might add.

A polar shift would certainly cause some issues in navigation, given that most shipping and i believe aircraft (but not sure on that) use flux gate compasses.

But why would a "re-alignment" of the magnetic poles cause physical upheaval of earth? (by this i interpret as volcanoes and earthquages etc)

hehe In that case, please only buy good crap! I only became interested in this when the alignment on 21 December of that year was confirmed. That is a strong coincidence with the Mayan calender. BTW, the Mayan's timelines for eclipses in their future were dead on accurate; they were master astronomers. I am not putting out some crackpot end of times decree, there appears to strong science behind this.

Yes, geologists state that earthquakes, tsunamis, etc would go amok.

I think the charged ions in the atmosphere shield earth from solar radiation (or something like that).

Would earths core change shape?

The only difference between 2012 and other EndIsNigh® franchises is that it has not passed its sell by date and started to really stink...

I think you are right, by my calculations in 2012 I will no longer fit into my trousers and the zip will break, this will lead to the spilling of my stomach over the local area and heavy casualties will be reported withing 3 feet.

Come on guys, no previous "End is nigh" predictions had modern planetary science lending it credence. I think it is interesting that these ancients predicted this; however, on a more focused point, it is the science and real outcome possibilities that I would like opinions on. Do we have any astronomy scientist-types lurking on PH, waiting for their "coming out moment"? wink On a personal note, I think a more accurate prediction is that a Mosque will replace Westminster Abbey on 2038. biggrin

Well I hate to piss on your bonfire but prophecies are a load of cock and if studied the predictions are very general. The black hole you speak of is so far away its influence is less than mine on Nelson Mandela.

I'm only 35 but I have have seen at least 8 of these "predictions" over the years and the only one to come true is England losing the footie.

smile You are not pissing on my bonfire, I don't readily accept it myself. I simply asked for opinions. I must reinterate that the "prophecies" are a side note, it is the supposed alignment and its effect that I am interested in....the science man.....gravity, tides, havoc, etc! wink

Well for one thing if a planetary alignment has influence on us it proves astrology is valid.

Not astrology son, astronomy. smile Additionally, I am referring to influence by means of a space body lining up and doing a gravity jerk on us....not some damn horoscope.

Yes, but not in predictive models telling someone about their love life or finances....I am speaking of planets' alignments as to the effect on polar shifts, tides, etc. Are you being deliberately thick?

It's his natural state of being, (according to his horoscope, anyway)
