Hi guys

Have my 2005 535d M Sport about a month now and liking it. 42k miles with FSH.

About a week ago I noticed that the car seemed to be loosing power at high revs, in either Auto or S mode. For example. Standing start in D and floor it - traction control kicks in, good power up the rev band to about 4.5k rpm, then to second gear. But, when she reaches close to 4k rpm in 2nd she just seems to sit there struggling to get to 5k rpm (she oven wont change up gears), then the change to 3rd and there is a slight delay before the power kicks in again. My mate has one that he says has the same problem. Nothing to do with traction control me thinks.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks
Ronan

It's a diesel, surely it tails off at about 4krpm anyway? The 530d certainly does.

nah, it was fine before. I know what you mean but this is severe "hanging" at those revs and when she finally does change up gears, there is a hesitation before you feel the power back again

Not sure about the 535d, but the 335d pulls hard all the way to the re-line @ 5k with ease. Im sure this will be the same for the 535d.

The 530d runs out of puff because of the small turbo charger!

Please be sure to post back with the resolution on this; us 35d owners would like to know!

hmmmm...

have the car booked in on 17 March at BMW to get the once over and get this looked at. Was out in her last night though and the problem seems to have corrected itself. Back to normal now?!??!

As a matter of interest, when stationery and in neutral, she will not rev past 4k rpm, but rolling (eg, 30mph in Drive and slip her to Neutral) she revs to the red! perhaps this is normal?

Will update afetr 17 March.

I have never felt the need to rev that high stationary but have heard that this is what happens with these engines.

yup, 4K max in neutral is correct and working as intended

Cheers!

Thought it might have been an engine management problem with the rpm's (I had previous cars that limited the revs when the EML came on).

Thanks again!

I don't know if the 35d's fueling works in the same way as 30d but lots of posts on here, including me, about either pre-supply pumps and relay and Mafs, problem causes the revs to hang anywhere between 4-5K. Diagnostics usual show fault but not always when it's the relay, and can be intermittent. 45K is early for this to happen, but you never know.

Well, had to cancel yesterdays appointment but rebooked for Friday.

Whilst the car had corrected herself last week, on Friday evening it happened again and was like it all weekend until last night. Back to full power again now!

I have noticed a trend though (maybe just coincidence) but it appears as if it only happens when its wet!!!! Rain - problems; no rain - no problems!!

Will see how Friday goes. Feels as if its a turbo problem...

doublely interesting, mine first showed up in torrential rain on M23. Then again after the missus drove though deep water under a bridge. The pre supply pump, although behind a splash plate under the floor, is not water tight, and the pumps have known to suck in air around the seal, there fore water can get in too, thus damaging the pumps effectiveness. Keep us posted

Just at BMW now. Car has been working fine this last 2 days (wouldn't you know!).

She has been diagnosed with 45 faults on the air flow meter - they think that could be it. also as a matter of interest she has shown a fault on 2 glow plugs - noticed she was always lumpy on a cold start.

also, the previous owner had replaced the rear brake pads himself, but the brake pad warning messages kept coming up on the i-drive. they checked and the sensor had not been replaced and they tell me they cant put on new ones as the sensors are such that they wear with the pads, therefore putting on new ones would break them as the pads have done about 6k miles. so i am stuck with the brake pad warning lights until such times i want to replace to brand new pads again. bummer!!!!

cheers
