Tyres on a 325 sport

just picked up a 2002 325 sport, it has the 18" MV alloys, but I noticed the fronts have 255/35 while the backs have 225/40. all are bridgestone, car has only done 17K so I am assuming origil tyres, is that correct the front has wider tyres than the back?

I would be tempted to have a good look over the car if somebody has been crazy enough to swap over the wheels like that.

Tyres are pricey by the way, Protyre ususally cheapest from what I see on here.
