Cruise control failure and then limp home mode

Anyone hear of this.
New model X5 4.8i
Twice now in Dorset I've been driving along quite happily without cruise control set when on the HUD, dash info display and bottom line of the i-drive screen it says "Cruise control failure" and the engine dies 1-2 seconds later.
Power cycling the car then means the "reduced engine power" limp mode comes on, but on starting the car it just won't idle.
The only way of getting it running again is to start it, give it some throttle to raise the revs to 2-3000 rpm and then leave it running for 1-2 minutes. After about 10 seconds the limp home mode sign goes away, and then after doing this a few times everything is fine for 1000s of miles more.
BMW are foxed at what it could be - the only suggestion was perhaps some sort of radio interfearance.
Anyone heard of anything similar?
